  • OS FSa 110 Cylinder Head

I have to replace the cylinder head and rocker cover on this engine due to blunt force trauma by concrete runway. Does anyone know if you are supposed to grind the valves into the new head or just swap them over and hope for the best.

I know it's a plank but I'm sure a few members might have experienced this before.

    Cheers

Well the answer is yes if you want to keep good compression. I fitted the valves with some very fine paste and turned them with light pressure by putting the stems into the chuck on a mini dremel and running it for a few seconds.

Fitting the valve spring retaining split collets is the nightmare. The first attempt had me scouring the living room for the spring, plate, and one collet which had launched itself under spring pressure when I was trying to get the collets in. The plate actually bounced of the ceiling and left a little oily mark.

In the end I butchered a pair of ball joint pliers to act as spring compressors. Worked a treat. If you've got Bratwurst fingers then you are probably goosed. Luckily mine are more like chipolatas.

    All is done.

Some photos of my endeavours including butchered ball joint pliers, knackered old head, new head with inlet valve fitted.

Wow, what an achievement. I have worked on four strokes as small 750 cc but that really is miniaturisation. Good work.

I have just bought a pair of those ball link pliers. They seem very good. I will reserve them for ball links only.

Thanks Mike. It was very fiddly but I enjoyed the challenge. Yes the ball link pliers are good, and I was unhappy to have to take a cutter and grinder to it, but I tried all sorts of different ways of compressing the springs and nothing was really successful. Guess I will be getting another pair. (For doing ball links).
