Default trex 550 V2 over heating esc?

My sons 550 has been brilliant for 5 weeks until today that twice the esc went into pulse mode half way through his flights and when he bought it in, had 50% left in the lipos but the esc was very hot, never been like that before, warm yes but not hot.
Has anyone else suffered this as well.
Runs about 2200 head speed but might ramp it up a bit more to pull the amps out and see if that helps as he needs the power anyway

My Kosmik 200 was really hot today to James and it was not being pushed to hard to be fair. It also retained that residual heat for a long time too as there was no breeze today.

I think that's quite a low headspeed for the 550. I run about 2500rpm. Having a lower throttle curve will cause the ESC FETS to run hotter as they are discharging more current because of the lower curve. Running a higher headspeed will put less stress on the ESC and it should run cooler. This worked for me but the motor ran a bit hotter instead.

    was the motor hot too?..

P4ddy had an issue where his motor bearings were going, caused the esc to overheat and catch fire as it was pulling too many amps trying to spin the motor.

    Hey.

I was going to ask where your throttle curve is set to? Which ties in with the above why running too low a throttle curve can cause an ESC to run much hotter as it has to burn off the unneeded battery volts.
Its always best to run ESC's above 80% power for extended periods of time to avoid possible problems, the exception comes when using governor modes.

was running at 90% that i actually expect is over 2200 (haven't tach'd it) but today we upped it to 95% and had no issues and was running cooler, even though the day time temp was about the same as yesterday
