I used to fly a TT Minititan, that was a tough little heli, could throw it around over long grass with most crashes no damage.Unlike brothers Trex 450.

Dont waiste money on a FBL setup on a 250. Makes no difference. Plus its so small for a 3G unit. & out of the 12 members of our indoor club 7 have a 250 because the 450 is too dangerous in a small hall. Everyone on this post has a good point regarding the 450 though. None the less I love my 250 and will never part from it.

I wouldn't go smaller than a 450 tbh, I have never seen the point in the 250. There is a 450 pro in the for sale section may be worth a look at. The pro and the sport fly much better than the old first generation 450's.
The 500 is a bigger repair bill, bigger servo's, blades etc.. the lipo's price's a quite a bit more for the 6 cell for the 500 than the 3 cell 450 lipo too. Cant see the point of the 500 is you have a 550.

Interesting post ... I love both my 250's and would never be without them.
Both of them are flown the most in my fleet and have also taught me the most.

Perfect size for the back garden, come home from work and fly a few bats - perfect fix - no messing.

Buy one, you won't regret it.

Which is the better 250? Fbl or fb? I was looking at the basic frame price of £115, then looking at the savox servos which should take abit of a knock. Standard motor and esc should be fine, but don't know which gyro to look at.

IMO - it depends on your level of flying. I started with the flybarred - great for figure of eights / circuits and backwards flying etc. The Fbl on the other hand is manic and makes a much better 3D machine. Obviously setup make a difference.

On the Fb, I ended up with the Quark gyro as I found this worked better than the align affair. As my flying has improved, I found that the Fb version a bit docile (unlike the Fbl - on stock motor & ESC) and upgraded to to a Hyperion motor & Phoenix ESC. Both models are running DS410 Metal Gear servos & DS520 Tail servos. I did have a JR DS3500G tail servos, which was awesome - but after a crash ....

    Hope that helps.

I'd say a 450 pro. I absolutely love mine for learning on. It's a rock solid machine and very capable in the right hands of every stick banging move around. As for crashes, they are pretty cheap. I'd say between £25 and £40 tops the majority of time. It's usually just blades, fly bar, feathering and main shafts that go. They are pretty bomb proof machines. And just that bit bigger that you won't loose track of it quickly like a 250.
    Cheers, Rich

When I bought my 250 everyone told me not to do it and buy a 450 instead, but I bought one anyway. I did find it very twitchy at first but calmed it down by putting weights on the flybar and that helped immensely. The weights are now coming off as I'm starting to fly it inverted with loops rolls etc and really enjoying it. Its the heli I most fly, and fly it at home in the garden but got confident with it at the field first. I have also just built a 450 clone to see if thats as good to fly in the garden as others have said how good the 450 is. I agree with the other posts in that its a Pita to fix and it can be hard to see at times, its fully 3d capable and can get away from you very quickly, a high vis canopy is a must, that said I'm still enjoying mine and I fell if I can fly it well, anything else is going to be easier and more stable. Good luck with your decision.

I have to say I love my 250, so much so I have converted it to FBL Beast X. I was flying it yesterday in gusts up to 20, although it felt less to me. The FBL conversation has taken it from “a bit of a toy” into a usable member of the fleet. The main reason why I love it is its size, I can fly it almost anywhere and people don’t get upset by its presence, this means I can walk to local flying spots at the drop of a hat.

I haven't got an mcpx so can't comment on whether it's more or less twitchy than the 250. I haven't gone flybarless yet but have bought a Beastx for my 500 to try first.

The whole perception of big / small / cheap / expensive etc. is all relative but for me a couple flights on a 250 and
then seeing how small and fiddly it is to work on and I never wanted one myself.

Even a 450 gets pretty small in the air but the 450 is undoubtedly the best balance of size, cheap parts etc. and
yet still capable of being a good practise machine. The 500 is even better in that it flies much 'bigger' but all round
the 450 can't be beat when you think of the cost, everything on them is cheap and can be found everywhere.

Don't be jaded by your experience with the 450XL, the newer ones fly very well. I have put my Trex 450 SE in
so many times I lost count ages ago and yet it's rarely more than just a few inexpensive bits broken. I kept mine
very 'budget spec' with Emax ES08 metal gear servos, kept the flybar with KBDD paddles etc. I never stripped
gears after putting in those servos. Most crashes result in bent feathering shaft, maybe main shaft, stripping a
few teeth on the main gear, bent boom, maybe blades etc. (I have had a few hard crashes where the blades
survived somehow). For the 450SE / Pro / Sport you can get canopies super cheap as well. I don't think there's
any single part more than £20.00 (so long as you don't use expensive blades).

I'll have to respectfully disagree. The 500 is easier to repair and the cost of parts only slightly more. Sure, initial cost and batteries is a bit steeper, but compared with a few years ago 500s are soooo much more affordable.
