Angry DX8 reset while powered on and bound

    Hi there,

has anyone so far experienced the following?

I use a DX8 on 2.04 firmware with the original LiPo. Today I was at the field, same as yesterday where I had 12 flights with the DX8 and my models. So today after 4 successful flights I prepared my 600ESP for another.

Powered on the DX8 (8.1V), enabled throttle hold, started my BEC, model bound successfully, checked servo movements (just to be sure, do that every flight), connected the main battery (model is now live) and took it to the flight-line. I was taking a breath and was just about to flick out of throttle hold when I heard the usual Spektrum DX8 - beep-beep.

I looked down to the transmitter but the display didnt show anything (dead blank), undid the neck strap ran across to the model and hold the head, just in case. Pulled the canopy off, was about to pull he EC5s apart before I looked at the receiver on the model, which was showing a constant light, so fully bound and connected. Just to being able to describe what happened I stretched for the DX8 cyclic and moved to the right, the servos responded correctly. I then pulled the battery and took the model back to the bench. At the bench I checked the receiver again, still constant red light, before I shut down the other electrics as well.

I showed the DX8 to other members at the club it was still "on", the Spektrum logo shining bright, but no display at all. No one had ever seen this before. I shut down the transmitter and power cycled it, seemed to boot up as previously.

I didnt want to risk a model or worse by having the transmitter cutting out in flight, hence the post if anyone has experienced this and as a possible warning. I will contact Horizon on Monday to get it inspected or replaced, as also my throttle gymbal never had a 0% input, only if you manually press it down else it will stay at 1%.

This stopped me from flying on a near perfect Sunday after a rain period

    >> also my throttle gymbal never had a 0% input

you could fix that yourself in the calibration menu, but of course it won't help with the other problem.

First of all well done for not flying, I know a few people who would have rebooted and carried on.

We lost a model today on a dx8, apparently total signal loss but still under investigation. It wasn't loss of power.

There's no way I'd fly risk flying with that transmitter again. I'd send it back for examination, but it sounds like an intermittent fault that might be impossible to reproduce.

I'm worried about my own DX8 now!

it wasnt loss of power, I think, didnt look down at the time. its more like the transmitter rebooted itself or something like that - as I wrote everything was normal until the "beep-beep" when the display blacked out, the power indicating spektrum logo was lid all the time.

Very odd, Sev recently changed to the DX8 from the 7 so should hopefully be flying whilst this TX goes in for checking. Many in the club are using the 8 without issue. As a club we banned there use when the first inklings that something was wrong with them. But we've never had a loss that we can attribute to one so Sev might just have a pre modification one.

Try to get the fault to happen again. It could be an intermittent connection that failed when you moved the tx. Moving the tx around might make it happen again. If you can reproduce the fault it will help to fix it and when you get it back you'll be able to check that it's been fixed.

well good point, oddly enough, when I just took it out of my box it sounds there is something lose inside, so there could be a short maybe ... at least I cant remember the DX8 making a rattling noise inside ... also the powerlight sequence seems to be different now .. it powers on, when the display completes it powers off, then blinks twice before remaining lid ...

Interesting thought, but unlikely as there was a complete lack of stock in the UK for about 2 weeks before he got it, so Sev's one came from fresh imported stock, also that particular problem was never a widespread issue.

There is only one known bug that causes a reboot and that involves repeatedly swapping between Mix 1 and another mix in the setup screen so I doubt that is it.

I have seen the blank screen problem reported before though and in that case the Spektrum rep suggested opening the case to check if the screen connector had become loose, but failing that he also said it would have to be returned to HH for a check which seems like good advice anyway.

the 500 was a new setup due to fbl conversation and during the setup of the 600 it turned out that some stuff was setup incorrectly so I did the mechanical setup again - so basically I would have to re-setup both models on the DX7. but the reason why I purchased the DX8 was another, the DX8 has a much more confortable grip (DX7 was too slim, small) and I prefer the feel in my hands, else I would have stayed on the DX7 anyway ... I'll see ...
