Angry DX7 Out of the box - Faulty

Happy new toy (ermm Advanced Recreational Equipment) I thought ...
Opened it up this morning, put it on charge, come to try it this evening and PROBLEMS.

    Powered up OK, showing 11.3Volts.
Bind to mCX OK, controls working.
Enter System Setup, Scroll and Adjust buttons sluggish, no repeat on holding button in.
I try a simple test "Model Name" I go for "mCX", 1st character goes in sloooowly, have to press button more than once just to get character to change. 2nd character goes in even slower. 3rd character system freezes before I can get to "X"
Other menu items become impossible to access once it grinds to a halt.

Oddly the Tx flies the mCX OK it just won't allow system changes.

I managed to get it change to Model 2 and bind my mSR.
Same problems with name, flies OK

I found that disconnecting the battery for 30 secs then reconnecting gave me a short space of time where System changes would work, still no key repeat. After that short time it freezes up again.

It's like some CMOS device in there holds enough charge to run a few operations but isn't being refreshed.

I've surfed for clues and it seems there's no factory/hard reset or anything that's accessible by the user.
Sure I found that System Diagnostic (YouTube et al) link but that looks way too dangerous to mess with (memory locations, Hex codes n stuff) and anyway my buttons aren't working so I wouldn't be able to get in there if I wanted to.

    Contacting supplier in the morning.
Not a very auspicious start for my 1st day with a Spektrum Tx.

    Yeah, innit.

I'll be on to them in the morning.

Damned annoying though, wot, eh Jeeves?

At least I have my new mSR to play with (ermmm gain valuable flying experience upon).
I guess Phoenix will have to wait a little longer before I can terrorise the virtual skies with my amazing 3D abilities (dreaming again...)

That's bad -really bad. I'm not impressed with Spectrum workmanship -its nothing like Futaba or JR. I'd return it and ask for the money back - not fit for the purpose. I'd not accept it being sent out for repair - you don't know what else might be wrong with it ~£300 you paid for it and then take a chance? Not worth it. It is not shopwner's fault so s/he should return your cash back.

I was kicking myself for buying the Futaba T6EX without really doing any research, thinking that I should have gone down the Spektrum road.

Are they really as unreliable as the many posts suggest, or is it because there are a lot of them about?

As it stands, I'm more than happy with the Futaba (although it's not really future proof), and I reckon I'll stick with the brand from now on.

    Default Service with a smile.

Just spoke to the shop at Inwoods, they're replacing it via courier on Monday.
    Can't say fairer than that.

You can't really answer that without access to data - which is unlikely to happen.

But my guess would be that Spektrum reliability is pretty good.

    I've got 4 of their TXs, (2 * DX7, 2 * DX6i), and maybe 12 receivers, which get used reasonably heavilly. I'm pretty happy.
    Yes, it's th@ tw@ Scallyb@...

All sorted, and in minimum time too.
    Replacement came this afternoon.
    This one works just fine.
