Default Servo horns plastic or metal??

    Hi All,

Just rebuilding my trex 500 efl. Had to replace a servo and I noticed the new one (original align Ds 510m) only came with a plastic horn. The original kit came with metal ones. I think I remember someone saying while learning use plastic as will be less likely to strip gears in a crash? With the plastic ones can you just thread the ball link onto the plastic or do you need a nut on the back?
    Any thoughts?

    Cheers.

You will need a nut at the back.

As above, you want to use a nut on the back (don't forget loctite on nut thread).

I've heard of some plastic Align servo horns stripping in flight (or was it on Align servos??) where metal fixes it - but other than that I would recommend plastic over metal to save servo gears.

I'd always use plastic myself for the same reason. I can imagine aswell links more likely to bend & servo's burning out with a metal horn, i'd prefere the horn to give way. I recently went from a skinny horn on my Gaui 200 to a beefy one & the difference in the collective response was huge but i doubt you'd notice the difference on a 500 as the horns are already beefy

Unless you actually know the model it is difficult to just say use plastic servo horns. Plastic can be thick or thin soft or hard. On the 500EFL the ball is on quite a long standoff and there will be a reasonable amount of leverage that will cause twisting on the servo horn. Maybe you could do a test when it is together. If you see the servo horn twisting then you will need to go for something stronger.
