Ouch!!!!


In my experience Cable easily out performs any of my mates phone based connections so I've stayed with them. Sometimes it would be nice to have a static IP but there are ways round that that cost bugger all so it's a no brainer

Not sure if you mentioned you had run Spybot S&D - I use this with CCleaner and Avast to great effect - the only thing this lot doesnt cover is anti-spam and firewall (can get away with Microsoft Firewall or Zone Alarm)

Uninstall any old programs that you dont use.

Open a command prompt and run the following (if you have the OS CD available):
sfc /scannow
This checks for missing system files and replaces as required from CD.

Open a command prompt and run the following:
chkdsk
This checks the disk for errors, use chkdsk /f to fix errors if any are found.

Click start, settings, control panel, system
click the advanced tab
performance settings
advanced tab
check processor scheduling and memory usage are both set to programs
click virtual memory change button
ideally set the paging file to custom with and initial and maximum size of 1534 or more (I recommend 2048 personally). If possible put this on its own partition of FAT or FAT32 but if you cant do this or dont want to dont worry.
The reason for fixing the paging file size is that it prevents it becoming fragmented as it grows and shrinks - a non contiguous page file will markedly slow down a system that is paging (windows pages a great deal no matter what ram you have installed).

Most stable operating system on them But tis expensive so if you weren't upgrading then wouldn't be worth it :/
