  • Advice on transmitter choice

My DX7 has seen better days although still currently works okay. Like most of us on here we like to upgrade from time to time and i have been thinking about a new transmitter for a while. I currently run DMS2 sats with the dx7, which given all my models is quite a few now and am reluctant to change them all without a very good reason. I have no great wish to sell the dx7 as i probably wouldnt get a vast amount, so the BnF 130x/mcpx can still run from the dx7 if i change brands.

The dx8 seems the obvious choice, but i like the look of the JR xg8 or JR11x. From what i understand the xg8 comes only with DMSS compatibility but not DMS2. Does the Vbar or vortex accept these sats? I dont really want to be running a separate receiver as well. The 11x is more than i had wanted to spend but would it be compatible with the satellites i currently have and therefore negate the need for separate receivers with my FBL units?

Any help or advice much appreciated.

I have recently come from an old dx7 and bought a jrxg8. As you said its dmss so only JR's receivers will work. Also if you running a vbar you will have to use a separate receiver but that didn't bother me. As for using the xg8 it took bit of time getting use to the menu system but after 2 weeks of using it i really like it. Im glad I chose it. I also think the offer is still on to get a free JR 8ch receiver worth £80 when getting an xg8 or xg11

I had no issues with my 8, and sold it on to a clubmate recently when I bought a dx18qq.

The 18qq is a lot nicer on the sticks, and will do a lot more, but really i bought it for its feel (the 18 should be the same)

I would go with a DX8, Despite all the apparent problems I know of at least 8 DX8's of various different ages and none of them have had problems at all. The programming is simple to use and it offers some useful features over the Dx7.

well to me the clear choice goes with which one does the job and feels right ... I would never buy a transmitter again without having played with it or having held it ... its such a difference on paper but when you actually hold them, thats what counts for me - surely also the reliability. I had the DX7, DX8 - still got it - and the DX18 ... the DX18 for me is the most advanced one and it feels superb ... some JRs feel actually quite nice, fat an robust but having a separate receiver put me off ... futaba, if you got small hands not even the 18MZ did it for my hands ... but as mentioned earlier grab a few, have a feel and decide from there - then identify which one has the features you are looking for ...

Thanks guys all good advice. I shall make a trip to midlands and have a play with some transmitters. I like the sound of the JR radios and if it feels right and I can afford maybe the dsx11 is the way forward.

The DX8 defo had issues but I've have a later one (with all issues supposedly sorted) and have had zero issues with it in a year, in isolation I thought it was a great TX (and it is) but stack it against the 18 and the 18 really is a bit better. It was the feel in the hand that did it for me too. It's log fallingly easy to program as well.
My only other serious choice was the 11x (which can now be upgraded with the XG11 FW) but much as I loved it's quirky looks and cool screen, it just didn't feel right in the hand. I really wanted to buy JR or Futaba, believing them better built, but neither of them tick all the boxes the DX18 does.

i have a dx8 , i love the ease of use and feel of it, BUT i would not buy another and i wouldnt recomend one to anyone, mine has only had to go back once and hh were brilliant repairing it and sending it back, but 2 club members also have dx8 and both have had to go back with the same fault.

                          Re: Advice on transmitter choice

I work in a shop and the DX8s outsell all other TXs by 10 to 1 at least, and for a good reason. So yes you will hear of more problems but more are out there. If you can stretch to it the DX 18 is superb but may be over specced for what you want. As for JR or Futaba, just as good. The best TX on the market at the mo is the one that best fits your hands and has the best ergonomics for you. Personally I have just got rid of my Speky gear due to upgrading to the Jeti DS-16. Now that really is the mutts nuts!
