  • Building your own generator

Well a few people have asked me about this now on the forum, so I thought I would share what im doing. Feel free to chip in with comments, suggestions e.t.c. But if you dont think it will work, please share why, dont just condemn the project

The inital plan was to build a 12V field generator for our club , South Hants Helis.

I wanted to do this with basically no money, and no stuff, which of course is impossible.

So, I started out with an old lawnmower engine, its an H60, and it puts out 6HP, or it did, when it was made some time in the 1970s. I had this engine from an old air compressor project about 10 years ago. It started back then, but I hadnt done anything other than give it a rub down and a lick of paint.

Its now mounted on a makeshift chassis, made from CLS timber. I've chosen timber as its very very quick and easy to work with. Its also an insulator, which will come in handy later as the plot thickens....

Its had a nice clean up of the carb, and now fires up nicely

...for an old engine it seemed to start & run nice! What you gonna use to actually generate the electric & regulate it?

If you used a (possibly modified) truck alternator you'd get 12/24v straight out perhaps?
Put in an old truck battery for a bit of smoothing?

See no reason at all your project would not work.

        Good luck.

that will never produce any electric unless you fit an alternator to it

i'd wait until next door are asleep and borrow the one off their new car
all in the aid of testing and a note saying it will be returned when finished with

or find a club mate with an unused old car on the drive and use the one off that
the alt should have an in-built regulator

i'd add a battery to the circuit and then use the battery to power the lipo charger
and not try to power the charger off the alt

          and if it doesn't work

If it isn't portable? What's the point of building it to charge down the field? Or, is this the PROTOTYPE before building the real deal?

That's very unscientific. Current means movement of charge. That needs a circuit. It would only work if you moved up and down while something was attached to a convenient anchor point. Possibly jump leads? You would need two anchor points of course and so two friends would probably have to hold hands while each was attached.

Once we have put 2 cubic metres of concrete down as a hard stand to support it and chained it down like a rabid Saturn rocket, it will be fine, Oh yeah, I forgot, and hired Pickfords to get it to the field and used the local fork lift to move it to position, we should then be in a position to power up most of southern Hampshire and possibly even charge our LiPo's

                          Seriously though, great job James.

Its going to be a kind of rolling prototype, meaning that it will evolve into the finished article... not sure how finished it is going to be, but we will see.

Its definitely not going to be portable. Its going to remain at the field, so for security purposes it is going to be pretty immobile. This is fantastic news, as I dont have to worry about weight.

The engine alone is just about (easily) liftable by one person, but by the time you figure in two alternators, and two (possibly three) car batteries, its not going to be something you want to lift in an out of your boot.... plus... if its in your boot, then it wont leave much room for helis
