  • What are you packing

After finally managing to crash my Trex 500 esc (18 months old now) I thought it's time for some new packs for her as I'm not so happy with the old ones, Gens Ace 3300 30C as they started to puff after about 6 months and are now running warm as I've upped the gearing to get greater head speed. I didn't treat them that well when they started, I'd leave them fully charged for far too long but started taking a lot better care of them after about 4 months in.

Anyway, I'm thinking of the Turnigy Nanotech 2650 45-90C as the 3300 Nanotech looks too heavy (560g). Just wanted to know if people were running these and how many cycles I may be able to get out of them. Also what flight times I might expect running them on a DFC head at 2700 rpm doing sport / 3D ish flying.

If not nanotech what others are worth looking at, I guess higher c rating is what I believe I need but all help welcome.

I am mainly sport flying but Gens Ace 2600 25c. Have somewhere between 75-100 cycles on the older ones and they are still as good as new. After a weekend flying I always put them back on storage charge. Never leave them charged for more than a day. Zero puffing 5:30 flight times at 2500 RPM 25% left in the packs.

2650 turnigy blue for me. I have 10 packs,4 x 20 to 30c and 6 x 30 to 40c. with fast sport flight i get 5 mins easy, with 20 to 30 % left, come down only just warm, 2500rpm approx head speed (on cheap tacho yesterday)
to be honest, i cant tell any difference between the lower and higher c packs.

My packs are gettign very tired now.. a couple of years old and seriously abused by leaving them charged for the next time. I had a mix of turnigy 20-30c, nanotech and some kingpower packs from singapore: all 3000mah. One each turnigy and kingpower have failed on 2 cells each and the rest still work albeit getting a bit too hot and puffy now.
Despite others experiences with nanotech not lasting my experience has been good enough that i plan on getting 2 more 3000mah packs..good price, available UK warehouse and lighter than similar c rated turnigy's
If i could remember where i got the kingpower I'd probably get more of those..they were really cheap at the time

Whatever brand of LiPo you have they won't last so good if you don't break them in, leave them fully charged or discharged for periods of time, don't balance the cells up or charge at high rates all the time..

There is a certain amount of care needed for prolonging their life..

and as for battery recommendations, If you go budget, the standard blue turnigy lipos are a good bet or if you're not on a budget then OptiPower or Thunder Power packs are the favorites.

Most people I've asked about the nano-techs have been very unsatisfied with them and later buy the standard blue ones. Biggest complaint is short life span of the nanotechs.

            Thanks for all the feedback.

My only real sin was leving them fully charged for periods of time, but as I say I haven't done that for 6 months or so, other than that I always balance charge and break them in properly. Maybe I'm being unfare on the Gens Ace and had I treated them right from the off they'd still be fine? That said the first pack I had from them never puffed but just died because of internal resistance.
Guess my concern about going down the pricy route the nagging fealling that I could spend a lot of money and get the same results, or crash and damage. If I go cheap then even if the packs die relatively quickly or in a crash it won't feel so bad.

With flight packs my view is for the cost of one optipower/thunderpower pack you could buy 3 to 4 Turnigy ones (these are the batteries I'm familiar with which is 6S 5000 40C ones, the price difference might be smaller on smaller packs)

So even if the good packs lasted twice as long as the cheap ones, the cheaper packs are still better value for money.

I think the other element is how hard do you fly and how often do you crash... If your a steady flyer or crash on a regular basis then your lipos might be dead from crash damage before they would normally expire, in which case cheaper is better.

If you need all out performance and you've got past the stage of taco'ing packs (or perhaps you've got bottomless pockets lol) then the more expensive option becomes a better choice.

I have a few Thundepower packs for my 500, 2250 & a 2700s - also a few AGA Power Ones from China rated at 50c 2600's and I can't tell the difference, so will be buying the cheaper packs in future.

Last year I was seeing some super cheap LiPos from China but now when I search on Ebay I don't see them. If memory serves they were something like £19.00 for a 3000mah 6s pack. I was going to try a couple because at that kind of price it's pretty hard to go wrong really (assuming they do actually work and don't explode or something)

Thanks for all the advice. I've ordered one of the nanotechs to try purely because of the c rating and pack size. If its no good ill try one of the others above.

Where did you get the Aga power ones Doug? I found their website but did not see any stockists.
