  • Main gear 'warped'

My 600esp has been making some strange noises recently. I've replaced the motor bearing and the ones in the bearing block on the main shaft. But recently a new noise (squeaky flutter @ a certain RPM) has started. When looking at the main gear I saw it doesn't spin flat, I have now put in a new; main gear, auto gear, main gear bearing block (one way, shaft etc.) and main shaft and it still doesn't spin 'flat'.

    See video.

    Any ideas?

    Ollie.

Apart from checking even tension/flatness of the one-way housing into the main gear there's no adjustment there...not sure that'd be responsible for your noise anyway... need to recheck where you have and move down the powertrain UNLESS its possible to recreate the noise on the ground with blades off and use a probe and fingers to isolate the position (any solid rod for safety and apply to areas of frame and bearing housings to feel for vibrations: front boom block, boom supports, boom for tt vibes, motor mount etc)

      Hello Ollie
Looking at your video every thing looks straight except the main gear, prehaps take main gear off and lay on a flat surface,(glass)
and check, Looks like a warped gear to me...

Apart from doing what 10x stated above... you could try removing the tail and sliding the motor pinion back away from the main gear (so the main gear is completely free spinning) and see if it still wobbles. If it still wobbles try slackening off the bolts on your main shaft bearing blocks.. in other words it's a process of elimination I'm afraid.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Can only be a prob if its riding on the tapered part of the pinion.I have had worse warped gears than that.

Also, dont over tighten the jesus bolt.

Its very common to have some run out on the main gear of the Align helis. Ive gone through a few on my 550 and all had some degree of run out. The CNC helical gears are better than the regular straight cut ones (think the delrin is even better?)

You could try a different orientation on the one way hub. So unscrew all the bolts holding the main gear to the one way bearing hub, twist it 90 degrees and then put the bolts back in and carefully tighten up in an opposite sequence. Dont go mad with the tightness as it will just warp the gear more. Ive done this before and it has made a difference

Also as Nick said go easy on the jesus bolt holding the assembly to the main shaft.

Thanks for the response guys .

When my 600 was making a strange noise it was before I replaced my motor bearing, I haven't flown it since so I could have fixed it. However, looking at this I assumed it could cause some vibrations and unwanted noises. But I may be able to reduce the 'warpedness' by rotating the bearing block or loosening jesus bolt etc.

So if there is a little bit of 'warp' in the like in the video, this isn't a cause for much concern?

Don't worry about the warp - "they all do that sir". As one of the other chaps mentioned do not do the Jesus bolt up tight. It should just be nipped, that's why the nut has a nylon insert in it.
One issue these helis have always suffered from is that the mainshafts seems slightly too small in diameter - it can result in your mainshaft turning within the main bearings. Have a look at your mainshaft where it goes through the beaings and see if the shaft has been polished by turning within the bearings. This can result in heat being generated and strange noises. I tried all manner of things including glueing the shaft inside the bearings - but that resulted in vibration as the shaft was slightly off centre. I even installed the KDE thrust bearing blocks but found the cure to be to 'over' oil the bearings ensuring that they could spin as freely as possible.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!
