• Formula 1 Fantasy League

A pal of mine at work has set one of these up and it looks really cool, so I'm proposing to run one on here.

Please indicate your interest in this thread.

To get it up and running, I would setup the league and invite forum members to join in. I would set up a specific PayPal account just for this so that you can pay in to join the fun. I'd suggest an entry fee of £10 or £20 per man say, and all the money would be distributed as prizes at the end of the season. The last race is in November, so this would be a handy cash bunce just before Christmas for the winner, runner up etc. Once I have a good idea of numbers and money in the pot, I can figure out how many places of prizes can sensibly be made, but in theory, I'd go with 50% of the prize fund to the winner, then various reducing amounts down to just the stake back as the bottom prize - i.e. you'd get your entry fee back as say 3rd, 4th, 5th place.

Here is the link - Castrol EDGE Grand Prix Predictor

When you join the league, you will be prompted by email a week or so before each race to enter your predictions for the top 10 places in the race, fastest lap, pole position etc. Then you get points depending on how accurate your predictions were. If you miss a race by being on holiday or something, then the system will just automatically re-use your last prediction for the next race, so it's pretty self contained.

Please let me know if you're interested, and how much you think the entry fee should be. Obviously, the higher the fee, the higher the prize fund is likely to be, but also bare in mind that £10 or £20 say paid now will be long forgotten about by Christmas.

Here is a summary of the instructions copied from the website:

[h=1]HOW TO PLAY[/h][h=3]Registration[/h]You must provide a unique teamname for your account. Any names deemed inappropriate or offensive will not be allowed and one or more of your accounts may be withdrawn or disqualified from the game as a result.
All fields are mandatory and if you do not complete the registration form fully, you may not be able to create your user profile and will not be eligible to win prizes.
You may sign up as many teams as you like, however you can only register one per e-mail address.
[h=3]Making your predictions[/h]Playing the Grand Prix Predictor is easy. Just predict the top 10 finishing order of the upcoming grand prix using the simple tool on the 'My Predictions' page.
Click on the image of the driver you want to choose from the driver list and drag and drop it into the box that denotes the position in which you think he will finish. Positions 1-3 are denoted by the podium at the top of the page, with positions 4-10 shown underneath.
You can also predict which driver you think will get pole position, which driver will set the fastest lap and which driver will gain the most positions during the race. To select your driver simply scroll through the list of drivers for each category until you have found your chosen candidate.
As with the top 10, you will score points based on these predictions.
[h=3]Changing your predictions[/h]If you are unhappy with any of your predictions, simply click the 'x' symbol next to the driver's image and he will be returned to the driver list.
[h=3]Saving your predictions[/h]Once you are happy with the predictions you have made, click the 'save' button at the bottom of the screen and your predictions will be set. If you change any predictions afterwards, you must press 'save' again in order for the changes to take effect.
You can make unlimited changes to your selection up until 5 minutes before qualifying for each grand prix, at which time your predictions will be locked.
[h=3]Non-submission of predictions[/h]If you enter less than 10 drivers in your prediction for any grand prix, you will not score any points for the missing positions.
If you fail to select a driver for pole position, fastest lap or most positions gained you will not be eligible to score. You will however be eligible to score for your top 10 predictions.
Once you have made a prediction, this will automatically become your prediction set for the full season, unless you change your predictions between grands prix.
Once you have registered your user profile, we will help you keep on top of your predictions by sending a helpful email reminder leading up to the deadline for each race. You can enable or disable these notifications via the My Account page.

C'mon peeps.

It's only a bit of competitive fun potentially with a nice prize pot at the end of the year.

All team entries will be fully visible on this thread.

Good call. Any particular charity?

From a personal stance, I would vote for Diabetes UK, but then I am a long term Diabetic and value their research etc from a personal level.

But, I'm not going to force my choice on anyone here.

Maybe people who are interested in taking part could nominate a charity?

Also, what proportion of the prize fund? May be 1/3rd to charity, 1/3rd to the winner and the remaining 1/3rd split down through 2nd, 3rd places etc?

Maybe the winner could nominate their chosen charity?

Thoughts?

What is the point of putting loads of time an effort to win the league just to see the money go to charity? If that is going to be the result you might just as well ask who would like to give a tenner to charity now and it will get paid to them in November?

Andy i give plenty to charity every year mate. But Im a firm believer if your doing something for charity its all or nothing. So like I say if its 100% to charity of the winners choice. Im in if not ill just watch

I don't wish to draw too many comparisons with the annual forum Christmas raffle, but it can't be helped. The point being that it is a great way of raising money for a worthy charity and I always take part and never win anything :concern:, but there is also something in it for the lucky winners, some very nice donated prizes indeed.

This is intended to be a bit of fun over the duration of the F1 season, and it's timing couldn't be better, so I think some of the money could easily go to charity, but not all of it. It needs to remain a friendly competitive event in my opinion.

How about split it 50/50 and the winner chooses the charity?

But this thread was not started as a way of doing something for charity.

If you want to give a tenner to charity be my guest. If someone wants to start a competition with money involved it goes to the competitors. If the winners want to donate to charuty that is their choice..

It wasn't started as a charity donation, but we are a democracy and I think it's a worthwhile suggestion in part. I'm not prepared to give all the fund to charity for exactly the reasons you stated Andy, but some of it is fine, unless of course there is a sudden swing to the left (so to speak), and an upsurge of people saying 'No' to charity donations.

To summarise the suggestions so far:

No money to charity, all funds to go back as prizes.
1/3rd splits between charity, the outright winner and other places, charity chosen at the start of the season.
1/3rd splits between charity, the outright winner and other places, charity chosen by the winner.
50/50 split between charity and winner(s) with charity chosen by the winner.
To be fair, this isn't going to work unless we've got 20 or so people committed to taking part. We need a decent number to (a) make the league competitive throughout the season, and (b) to make a sensible prize pot which is worth winning/donating.

I'm more interested in names at this stage to see if it's worth doing.

Opinions and names please....

Edit: Just to add, before suggesting this idea, I cleared it with Stuart just to make sure there were no issues with gambling on the site or similar, and he's happy with it.

Ok, for what it's worth, I've set up a league for the forum.

Please follow this link to join the league - http://gppredictor.com/league/join

The forum league reference is 06837f0d30ac2839917e69e81952f669

Please use your forum username as your team name so we can all see who is who. My own team name is Steve's Stooges, only because I already have a login for a similar fantasy league at work, so already have an account on the website.

The first race is 17th March, and the fantasy league predictor will be open from 4th March. Join now and you will be notified in due course by the website.

Entry is open to anyone for fun for free, but if you want to pay to join and be a part of the competition, please PM me. I will set it up when I get a better idea of numbers. I will set a closing date for paying members as the end of April. A final decision about what to do with the prize money will be made shortly after that, but rest assured, it will all be given away to (a) forum members or (b) a split of forum members and a charity nominated by the winner.

Opinions for how how to split the fund are still welcome.

Thanks.

Registered,

I think the money should be between charity and the top three but don't really mind too much how it's distributed.

Hamilton for the world driver's championship anyone? :)
