  • Two 500 efl's, Is there a need?

I've found myself with two trex 500 efl pro airframes after doing a deal on a trex 600 efl pro that a mate wanted. There not quite the same ones a dfc so has the lowered head & better servos which I have built & flown once. My question is what pros & cons are there to owning two models of the same design? I was maybe thinking of selling it or would it be better just to keep it as spare parts maybe breaking it down into kit form.
If I did sell it what could I realistically ask for the airframe with blades, motor, servos & 3gx & esc?

If I had two of the same model, i'd end up always flying the one that was either higher spec'ed or the one that I thought flew nicer.

So it would just be like having one model really, unless the nice one was grounded, or the ground grounded it....

So it might be good as a backup, but even then I guess I would still be thinking, I wish I was flying the nice one.

          Two 500 efl's, Is there a need?

There's no real advantage other than having one to fly if you bash the other, but in my experience the bashed one doesn't stay bashed for long lol so sell it and buy more lipos/spares or a completely different make or size heli ;-)

I have other models to fly if I bash it milly.
I seem to have got myself into a bit of a hole with models at the moment the ones I realy love flying are the 550 v1 & my 600N
No doubt due to cheep spares if I do have an incident with the ground its normaly not that expensive to fix.
Ive got a 450 x I dont fly a fusion 50 I dont fly & these two 500's which I bought because I thought they would be safer for me to fly alone.
Ive since found thats not realy the case as I have to fly them closer to me to see them hence actualy increasing my risks
I guess I need to have a real big think aout what models are best for my eye sight before just buying them in the future.
I need a 700 nitro realy, the new flying site is massive compared to were I was flying with Ross's infamous tree which meant smaller models so you would naturaly keep them away from the tree & hedge rows.

Get them all sold and get a 700n then

I have a 600n and 700n, and don't need anything else (apart from the mcpx )

If you don't need the money just yet then keep both.

I have a 500 pro dfc setup for 3D when I want to have a bash about.
I also have a 500 ESP with DFC. Setup soft for practicing for my 'B' certificate and F3C type flying.
Both get flown as much as each other and nice to have both styles readily available.

I've had the ESP for 3 years and it's a good old friend so in no rush to sell it anyway.

When i had the 2 raptors it was essentially the case of having a spare, they were both identical spec and used all the same parts so spare boom/blades could be bought a few at a time to cover both models, just maximises your air time.

Parts seem so much cheaper now and more easily available so not sure if i'd have 2 the same this time round...

I've had one for a bit over two years now and it has been in many ways the most useful heli I have, totally reliable, very portable and the heli of choice for working on new moves.

Because I know it's cheap to repair if I crash I am more daring with it, but oddly I end up not crashing. I think maybe it's because I am so relaxed flying it that I don't over-think anything. I lost count of how many times I got out of a very sticky situation with the 500. And even when it basically fell out of the sky once due to a battery wire coming loose the damage was only skids, one stripped servo gear and a little crack at the top of one frame half (but to be fair, I was just plain lucky in that I was flying level and upright at that moment).

I don't think I would need two 500s because parts are so easily available when you need anything but I wouldn't want to be without it for any length of time. Having one as a night flyer would be cool though, and not neccessarily to fly at night I'd turn the lights on just for the typical cloudy dreary winter daytime.

---Just to add, I have to wear prescription lenses for near-sightedness and often the low light is my biggest problem if it's really cloudy and not bright enough. I have a bright orange canopy that I use on the 500 that makes it visible enough. I find that I can only fly it with the stock red Align canopy when it's nice and sunny.

Near sighted sheryl is that where you see things close up ok but far away is blurry?
If so that's exactly how my sight is & why I like to fly bigger machines I can see better.
The problem with small helis is they get away from me very quick & I end up flying them at the range of my eyesight.

Yes it is. Most of the time I don't need glasses, I can work at the computer, watch TV, see a film at the cinema etc. and pretty much all the normal everyday stuff and never have a problem. So the only time I wear prescription glasses is for flying. I have one pair of sunglasses from (I think) Vision Express that I like the best but they're a bit dark and I have the original style Modelglasses and those can go lighter or you can flip up the tinted part but I don't like them as much as the others.

The only time I have a problem is if it's really cloudy and the sun starts to set and the heli becomes just a siluette and that's when I stop flying for the day (or I'll just do some hover practise).

So far this orange Phoenixtech canopy is the best for visibility on the small helis. I have the same canopy for the 450.

Try the Align blue/black/pearl white canopys. Really good at this time of the year & the poor light. I've tried the Fusno bright fluro fuz's & they arnt as good unless the suns out to make the fluro paints 'shine'
