  • Vortex or Vbar?

I have a Goblin 500 coming within the next couple of days and I'm undecided on what FBL unit to put on it. Do I go for the legendary Vbar? Or do I go for the new kid on the block a Spartan Vortex? I've read some good things about the new Vortex and know how good their gyros were. It's still early days but has anyone got some feedback regarding how good/average the vortex is? preferably with a comparison to Vbar.

My main FBL experience Is with BeastX on my trex, but after flying with Vbar on my Logo I definitely noticed how good the Vbar is in comparison, ive actually got a mini vbar coming to replace the beastX because of this. Now I'm unsure whether to kit my 3rd heli with one or go for another change to the Vortex

    Vortex or Vbar?

    Buy British!

More seriously, vbar is a very mature system and you can't go wrong.

That said, vortex is a very advanced controller and comes from Spartan, who rock. I'm sure the vortex is good now, but it'll only get better as time goes on too.

I would put my money on Angelos and support a talented small British company while I'm at it personally!

Next time I need a FBL controller it will probably be a vortex.

      V-Bar = Proven and certainly a winner

Vortex = New kid on on the block, Promising reviews so far but if I were buying for a new helicopter in the next two days it would have to be V-Bar.

Without doubt as time goes on more reviews will become apparent on the Vortex but its your money and your choice.

      We all have choices.

unless people buy them you won't have any reviews to go on, catch 22.

i have flown both extensively and have my own favorite now :-)

        cheers

Yeah which is my problem, if I wasn't given a choice my life would be a bit easier lol.

the vortex is new ,and as more people become owners of them the more knowledge and opinions will be available, one thing for sure is the system was not rushed onto the open market ,well over a year in testing and like all other spartan products im sure it will work very well and even beyond some peoples expectations . one thing that mite be nice to know is will the software updates be free or will they be chargeable ?
yet im sure if you did not like it or felt it was not suited for you, to sell it on would not be to much trouble

I have and am flying both atm. I took a Vbar off TDR no2 and put a Vortex on.

So far Im really enjoying it and have gave my opinions in a couple of posts on here.

The tail I feel is better and I made this decision based on huge tail slides, fast inverted tail first hurricanes and piroing out of a high stall turn, all the way down it is clearly constant and I used to think the Vbar's was but compared to this its not quite there. This is using Futaba BLS256HV on the tail. I've been flying it now for the past 4 weekends having back to back flights as I have been on my own due to the weather and just this weekend I finally clicked with it as it was the first time there was no crazy winds and boy did I love it.

Some of the other benefits are that you buy the datapod once as it is needed for setup but then you have all the features of the pro Vbar everytime you then buy another unit as the logs and vibes can be checked on that unit so can easily be done at the field too.
The data pod is also very easy to use, I was expecting it to be rubbish tbh but its easy to view, use and travel with at the field. I actually enjoy using it and tweaking a lot of the settings which tbh with the Pro Vbar I never really played with but the datapod gives you the freedom to and is easier to use and understand than the control panel with the Vbar.

As Tim says, the Vbar is proven and we have been here before with the likes of Beastx etc but this is a unit that is clearly IMHO on the same level and certainly has the potential to move above.
I may be wrong but I feel this has better sensors or better tech as its smaller and we all know as stuff progress's tech wise it gets smaller
And you can get comfort in the fact it was a long time in the making and was not released early no matter how much pressure was put on them lol

Tough call you have but you wont regret buying the Vortex at all but be prepared as its a new system and you have to learn a new system but with the manuals and guides which are not 42 but 2 pages long you can't go wrong

Edit, just added another move to the tail comments after reading Pedro's post Thats all I do with regards to the tail as I cant do anymore lol

given it is my sponsor i do not give flight feedback as it will only be seen as bias which is fair enough. there are enough reviews about now to get some insight into the VX1.

                      cheers

Thanks for the feedback gents, and thank you Ben this is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for.

My Vbar experience is limited so I'm still very much open on which to buy. Taking into account what has been said so far though, I am swinging towards the Vortex.

I like the idea of the data pod, having to go back home to tweak the vbar isnt a very practical option for myself, so doing changes in the field is a nice touch. learning a new system is no issue to me either. Its also nice to see Angelos so active on the site.

Still a tough call mind you, it's hard to disregard a system that has been dominating (in terms of performance) for so long and my logo does fly very well with the vbar.

I am contemplating getting a new 600 size electric FBL heli in the not too distant future and my plan at the moment is to start it off with a Beast X because I just can't afford everything at once. Then later I'll get a Vortex. This will also allow me to really compare the two FBL units on the same airframe.

Andy Kirby has posted videos and reviews Paul.?

Alan Szabo has posted videos using it.

I do know where you are coming from from with the "Bias because I'm sponsored by them" though. It can bite your arse.
