  • is it normal?

Ok all, I'm a bit concerned picked up a 500 heli and put a 4000mah Lipo in. Flew prob about 10mins BUT stop start hovers so only actually running half throttle or less for about 4 mins. Anyway after said time it sounded if it was kind of missing? Like power coming and going.... Put Lipo on charge and all the cells are 3.90 across the board they were all fully charge to 4.20 before I started, is this normal for heli to fluctuate when lipo gets this low or have I got a prob somewhere?.

That is the low voltage warning on your speed controller. All of the Align ESC's do that. as soon as it starts doing it land and recharge. You wont get a great deal more than 4 mins on a charge by the way. But defo sounds ok
Some say my left nipple is the shape of a Raptor canopy.......... And that for fun I chase sheep in wellies 3 sizes too big. All I know is I am 3D Clod

Thanks for that. Was thinking it was my motor or esc that was going wrong. So is it worth getting a 5000mah or is there really any diff flying time. only hovering at the mo just getting used to the feel of it. Having come from a 130x it feels like a lumbering elephant lol.

4000 mah is a big lipo for a 500. I have a 500 EFL Pro. I have played around with head speeds. Can get 10 min at 2000 RPM which is real slow for a 500. Soft and spongy in the collective at that.
At 2500 which is my normal flying I get about 5:30. The hard 3d guys run flat out maybe 3000 RPM and get maybe 4 min. I run to about 3.7 - 3.8 v unloaded after flying.

What throttle and pitch curves are you using?
What ESC have you got in it?

By default most are set to reduce power by 50% once they get below a certain power level. You should never run to this level as gets a bit risky.

        Cheers

hovering uses the most power mate! When you can fly about and take the strain off the motor your times will increase, But a 5000 in a 500 will be too heavy. I alway went 3500 max and could get 5 mins of mild 3d flight

As I'm learning left everything linear on both throttle and pitch I.e 0,25,50,75,100. And its the Align bl60g esc

So I'm looking at getting a 3500 Lipo that a bit cheaper LOL. The Lipo came with the heli so did another but it was 2x 2600 velcroed together with a y harness bridging the Lipo, but didn't fancy that as I think they were 4,s which would of made 8,s!!!.

I use 2600 mah 6s. That is on the lower side but more than enough.

Pitch curve is ok at 0,25,50,75,100
Throttle you should be running a flat curve or you end up chasing your tail. When you go down on collective you end up going down on throttle so have a double wammy and end up over correcting to keep it level. Lock the throttle in and you will find it much easier.

                For my pitch I have
Normal 40,45,50,75,100 this is so when you land you can go full stick down without plowing the heli into the ground.
Idle one 0,25,50,75,100 So around hover the pitch curve is the same so no jump when changing flight modes.
                Idle two 0,25,50,75,100

                Throttle
Normal 0,85,85,85,85 so other than landing you are at a fixed throttle
                Idle one 90,90,90,90,90
                Idle two 95,95,95,95,95.

These may need to change a bit depending on you motor and gear ratio.

Check out Mr Mels head speed calc. For basic hovering I use 2000 RPM but that is slow for a 500 and yours may not like it at that.
2500 I find is fairly good for all that I do but did blow the tail out the other week. A lot of people run much higher head speeds than this but it only cuts into flight times. Unless you are pushing hard 3D get a head speed that is ok for your flying style but maximizes your flight time.

                Cheers
500 is a great heli enjoy.
