  • A little confused

Ok so I am swaying towards a DX8 - 600n waiting for me to get myself sorted with a Tx.

However I am slightly confused as to what pack to go for...

I can go for the DX8 - AR8000 and Tele combo. However couple of things, one I have a carbon frame and two I have 3gx.

So can I run the above without the need to worry, install the Rx and satellite that comes with it without worrying?

Or should I just buy two sats (assuming they are called the below) and plug them straight into the 3gx unit.
Spektrum Remote Reciever - DSMX or do I need

Spektrum Remote Carbon Fuselage Reciever - DSMX

I am very confused, more than likely due to information overload and I am still havering over the Hitec Aurora9 - this all just seems a bit complicated at the moment so any help is appreciated.

So long as the aerials are not covered with or behind carbon fiber you should be fine regardless of brand of radio or type of receiver. the advantage of the carbon fuselage receivers is longer wire between the receiver and aerial to help when you have a carbon body. The AR8000 can use a sat as well (included with the receiver i think) so you can have the receiver on one side of the frame and the sat on the other to get around any shadowing issues caused by the carbon frames.

see this pic for a good example of a receiver and sat combo http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/galler...me-mod&cat=500 notice how the sat has its aerials point up and down while the receiver is pointing side to side

Just to avoid any set-up problems, it is worth noting that the AR8000 must use a satellite, it isn't optional, won't work without one.

Your best bet is probably to use two standard satellites directly into the 3GX. Just makes things a bit neater. You can still run telemetry with this setup -the only thing you won't be able to monitor via telemetry is your radio link data -radio fades/holds etc. You can only monitor that if you use a full receiver (or a Spektrum AR7200BX FBL unit).

By the way, the Carbon Fuselage Receiver mentioned in the first post is only needed if it is positioned in a fully enclosed carbon frame/fuselage, e.g. a carbon glider. You don't need these in a carbon framed heli, the standard satellites are fine.

Thanks guys - much much clearer now, I am down to Futaba, Spektrum and possibly the Aurora 9 (Hitec).

My local shop can do the DX8 with the Ar8000 (with sat) for £260 so its just deciding where to go now :-)

We've had a post recently about guarantees. It might be worth checking if the shop gives a guarantee of 12 months on anything you buy, or if you have to return it to the manufacturer. I think only Spektrum do the short wire rxs. Futaba and Multiplex use the longer ones which get you clear of the frame.

I use two satellites plugged into my 3GX on my 550e DFC. I mounted one sat vertically on the left rear of the frame and one sat horizontally on the right rear of the frame. Ideally this covers all aspects of the frame interfering with the signal regardless of the orientation of your heli. My feeling (and popular conception) is that anything above a 500 should have two sats for safety. I run a DX7s with the TM1000 telemetry (Flight pack voltage and motor temp).

Even three doesn't always do the job in all orientations according to the tests our chairman did. He has his own company doing hardware test software.

Thanks guys really good info - most helpful forum ever been on!

Few emails back and forth with the club, apparently their best heli pilot uses the Aurora9 but few others use the Spektrum so hopefully armed with this knowledge I can make a choice soon.

Thanks for the heads up on the warranty - will look out for that!

Most rc forums seem reasonable. Helis are so difficult most people need all the help they can get. If you look at the thanks and thanked numbers, both are usually quite high after a while.

Yes finding that - its such a complex subject too, even if you just take the nitro engine as a separate thing to learn for example.

I am trying to break it into chunks now - primary focus is radio set, then move to set up and get the right tools then move on to next bit :-)
