  • what could i chose?

    Hi all,

Im a complete noob, so forgive me on this...

Ive got myself a 120Sr rtf and would like to upgrade the transmitter to something that i could use again when i get another heli, have been told to get the dx6i but it looks so complicated..

Anything else on the market that would work with the little 120sr?

As you want to fly bind and fly now I say overcome your fears for complicated things and get a DX8. When the time comes you will have all the control you need for any helicopter that is of the pod and boom design.

If you can't afford it today then keep saving. There is very little point in the DX6i now and then needing something better tomorrow.

I don't know as I don't use one. If you google for binding dx8 tx to rx you will find lots of help and probably youtube videos as well.

Most speccy receivers will have bind instructions with them but it basically boils down to having a model memory of the corect type selected in the Tx, push a bind plug into the relevant port on the Rx and switch on the power to the Rx only, hold down the bind button on the Tx and then switch on. The led's on the Rx and satellite if used will be blinking rapidly. Once the power is switched on the led's will start to blink slower until the go out and then become solid. At this point they are bound. Remove the bind plug recycle the power and you're good to go

They do offer a dx7s without servos in a transmitter only package. I would think you may struggle to sell the included servos but I'm not 100%

You can't really go too wrong with the dx6i, dx7s and dx8 all great for varying levels of knowledge, skill and requirements.

Don't be put off by the complicated looks as you do more and more it will all become crystal clear! They are not too difficult to use! But don't forget if there is anything you get stuck on there's a hell of a lot of knowledge on these forums!!!!

It depends how far you want to go in the hobby. If you're going to stick to small bind n fly helis and maybe a 450 then the DX6i would be perfectly adequate for your needs. There is no need to go full bore and get a DX8 as a lot of people seem to suggest. I quite happily used a DX6i right upto to a 700 sized logo. Although if you need tend to stick with it for the long run and want to get into the hobby with bigger and more complex helis, then it would be a good idea to future proof yourself with something like a DX8, saves you having to buy twice and getting used to another transmitter.

The DX8 feels a lot nicer than the DX6i and at your stage, thats all the difference would be, feel.

The DX8 is actually a lot easier to program than the DX6i in my opinion, and I have programmed both.

There is probably nothing that you would want in the future that the DX8 wouldnt do for you however, so it could be a good investment.

Both Dx6i's and Dx8s sell well second hand.

I would say the DX8 is your best bet, It's a much higher quality radio than the Dx6i, I own both and find it horrible to fly with the dx6i after using the DX8. The DX8 has useful features such as two idle up modes for when you need it later. It has a throttle activated timer which is also very very useful as it means you never forget to start your timer. The DX8 would be a much better longtime investment and will most likely be the only radio you will ever need

A new DX8 TX only can cost less than £200 if you hunt around, no need to pay more for bits you don't need right now.

Inwood Models is often one of the cheapest places.

How do you know this? I nearly crashed a 450 using a DX6i as it was awful and the latency between me doing something and the model responding was very noticable. I used to fly the same model using a different radio and going to the DX6i was a massive downgrade.

I quite happily used a DX6i right upto to a 700 sized logo.
Again good for you, but that doesn't make it the correct choice for someone else.

Just because I don't like doesn't necessarily make it a bad tx but in comparison to the DX7 and 8 it is a pretty poor transmitter.

Oh come on Andy , with respect if your reactions are faster than a computer radio then you need to call NASA. That could have been due to dual rates or expo ?

Besides a noob isn't gonna have lightning fast reactions anyways :-) its a fine beginners set with 1000s of happy owners

I'll see what turns up, whatever transmitter I get it`ll be from ebay I expext or maybe on here.

A dx6i has to be better than the transmitter that I'll get with the 120sr dosnt it?

Because I have used it on all the models I've owned for the past 2 years?

But it proves the capability of the transmitter

Well I'm going by my experience which has been good. I'm not going to recommend something if it was sh*t. Its obviously not going to be as superior as the 7 or 8 as they are all priced and designed for different sectors of the market. For the budget conscious then it's a Tx to be considered and will fulfil the requirements. I'm not the one spending the money, so I'm listing his options based of on personal experience and The OP's future involvement in the hobby.
