  • opinions needed, DX7S really unsure about this!

Weeeeell, I just bought a DX7S as they have had some really attractive prices on them lately.

So I received it today and my first impression is yuk! I am seriously thinking about politely returning it to the shop for a refund.

Externally it looks fine, it feels fine but the look of the menus and the programming... is it just me... really seems cheap looking. The DX7 throttle and pitch curves are Soooooo much nicer and just everything in the DX7 menus looks sharper and more detailed.

I'm really torn here. The DX7 has worked fine for me all this time. My only gripe is the lack of a dedicated governor menu but that's not too hard to work around using a programmable mix. The only other feature I was really interested in on the S is the card slot for saving the memories and being practical that's really a pretty minor thing.

I'm not too bothered about the higher framerate or DSMX when DSM2 and the current frame rate on the DX7 seems totally fine. I am completely familar with the programming of the DX7 after having one for 4 years so any comparisons about which layout is more intuitive etc. really don't matter. I am also unsure I want to lose the extra flight mode (DX7 has normal mode plus idle 1 and 2).

Am I missing something more important here?

I was about to sell my backup DX7 but at the moment I'm thinking about just keeping it, returning the 7S with my apologies (yeah I'll have to eat the postage but that's life) and just be happy with the DX7 for now.

You are suffering from the common problem of moving from a JR made product to a Spektrum product.

The DX7S is a very capable radio, but it is never going to feel or look like a JR product.

I'd also note that in moving form the DX7 to the DX7S you have lost a flight mode, so I'm not sure it was an ideal change to begin with.

Times like this the Distance Selling Regs are your friend as they were put in place exactly to cover the situation where the product does not looks as good when you get it as it did on the page ...

I think its probably a case of what you are used to. As you know im on an 8, rather than a 7S but the layout and menus are pretty much identical.

I find the programming very straightforward, and much easier than my old futaba FF8.

I like the feel of it, but I know a lot of others dont, but having said that, I use a tray, so its only the sticks and the switches that matter to me.

Yeah, I am mindful of the effect of just being used to something and it's not a resistance to learning the layout of the 7S as I can see it's all very logical. It's a matter of not wanting to give up the 'niceness' of the DX7, the quality and detail in the look to the different screens.

I am thinking that the reality is the DX7 does everything I need it to do, even though it would be nice if it had a few other features, and that I fell into a 'grass is greener' scenario in wanting the 7S for those extra features before realising how much I might miss the other things.

I made the switch from a DX7 to DX8 about six months ago after the initial problems had been sorted out, mainly to gain the memory card slot facility as when I had to send my DX7 back to HH for checking it lost all its model memories in the process. I too was not bothered about the DSMX and still have my DX7 as a back up unit but have to say that after the initial steep learning curve programming the DX8, I now love the feel and options it has and the battery life with the Eneloop cells is fantastic.

Not tried a DX7S but if you are looking for something better than a DX7 then the DX8 is definately an option worth looking at but see if you can get to try one out first before you spend your hard earned cash.

if it aint broke dont fix it I would move to a futaba 8fg if i was upgrading from my dx7, but wouldnt go to a dx7s or dx8 the quality just isnt there imo (or reliability).

I just noticed the hover throttle and pitch trims are gone and the aux 2 is a pot instead of a switch. The pot might actually be interesting when setting up a governor but obviously it doesn't offer the same function as flipping a switch in flight.

I have some of my govs on the aux 2 switch and some set to enable automatically when I go into idle-up.

He certainly is, imagine suggesting an 8FG when everyone knows it should be a 14SG now

Seriously though, I still can't see the DX7S as an 'upgrade' to a DX7. Count the number of 3 position switches on them both (hint: it won't take long on the DX7S )

The DX8 would offer improvements without losing anything, but you are still stuck with the look and feel of the Spektrum radios which isn't loved by everyone.

                      I sold my DX7 to buy a DX8.
What i like about the 8 is the menu settings for me, are easier to use and i like the backlit screen.
What i don't like is it's really bulky compared to the DX7. So after 4 months with this radio i still can't get on with the feel of it.
I wish i had gone for another JR radio, but i'm stuck with it now so i'd better get used to it!

i moved from a DX7 to DX7s overall i happy with the move over, in my case the pots felt smoother than my dx7 plus SD card slot and firmware updates nice added extra i also found moving from dx7 to dx7s having the beep and vibrate was so much better than just the beep (dx7) that most of time i didn't hear. i also find very handy i can set timer to start automatically when i throttle up so no more forgeting to start it.only down side is screen bit dark but then again not end of world.

Good point, i forgot about that, the vibrate and beep function is also what attracted me to the DX8 which works very well.
Just the bulky feel of it need to get used to!

I moved from a DX7 to a DX8 and found it a great improvement. I am not a demanding flier. I haven't progressed very far from tail in hovering yet but I find the feel of the DX8 preferable, I like the programming features and the automatic timer is a godsend as I kept forgetting to switch it on with the DX7. I have kept the DX7 and I use it for the sim. I wouldn't want to go back to it for real flying.

                              Trillian,
I've just bought a 7s to replace my DX6i coz some dude on ebay has 'em new for £110. I don't think it's an upgrade to your 7, merely a replacement since Spektrum no longer have an association with JR. I think you should have considered the DX8 instead. It probably has all the features you currently have and will do most things you could want, however if you really like your 7, might be worth just sticking with that.
I used to have a 7 and really liked it when I used it frequently, after not using it a while I forgot how it worked and found it a little awkward to re-learn. The 8 is a little "berty basset" but on the whole is very intuitive to use. I don't think the quality is as good as the 7 though.
.......unless otherwise stated, all opinions are my own.
