The WOT 4 is an excellent plane, and just as capable as an extra IMO.

Plane 3d, is harder than starting out in heli 3d. You have to get the basics of most aerobatics first, before it starts to be come easier.

I loved my WOT 4 until I stuffed it into a tree after a flat spin (intentional).

Unfortunately the WOT 4 electic isnt quite the same beast, its not equipt very well (it comes as a RTF rather than an ARTF). The servos arnt great, and the motor and ESC are underpowered for what you really need.

thanks for the comment ha i shall take the 3d part out as was more on the lines of aerobatics like you said and i would end up totalling it if i tried to 3d a plane hah :P

i have read that the wot 4 is underpowered and about the electronics but also its a very good learner plane but just dont like the look of it and i could see me getting bored of it with the videos i have seen tbh

If you want to built an electric ARTF, then seagull make some pretty nice models.

Have a look at the Acrowot foam-e or if you want to go for Balsa and ply the Acrowot e; or perhaps a funfly like the Cougar 2000 / Evolution Fusion, both superb to fly and come as nitro or electric; alternatively if you've got money to burn anything Sebart with a Hacker powerset, serious bucks but very nice. Have a look at some of them on YouTube, it will give you an idea if they are what you are looking for!

you might get bored with it, but then thats the price for having something you probably wont crash first time out. My WOT 4 was my 3rd or 4th model after coming back to flying, so its by no means a beginners plane.

The pz extra 300 is a fabulous little airplane and is great from learner to fairly advanced aerobatics. but there is also now a new QQ edge 540 which looks to be very quick,it has a 2' wingspan so its not too small.

my extra 300 lasted nearly two years but a dumb thumb(pilot) killed it! :( (me! :D ) If i do replace it ,it'll be the QQ edge

Flies very nice as well, it's a Trainer with clout, I'm lusting after one!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Fm95AoE4M&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Going for the small stuff is just the same as small helis, tend to be very twitchy, if you dumb them down with loads of expo it's ok until you need to avoid something and need plenty of stick travel, then they suddenly become an angry beast - been there broken a few that way. I'm flying a Wot4 foam-e at the moment and honestly think unless you're prepared to spend bigtime you will have a job finding anything better; mine has had a few good mishaps and with boiling water and cyano / epoxy / hotmelt still flies like a goodun!
Hope you find something you like at the right price, but my advice is don't be overambitious, I've also been there and it cost me.

Personally I think thats too small.

I have a mini-edge 560 which is a bit bigger than that, and it gets pushed around all over the sky in anything other than a gentle breeze. Once that starts happening it just takes the fun out of it as you are constantly fighting, rather than flowing with your moves.
