  • How do I add channels without buying a new Tx

I keep looking at scale heli's for the future and love the idea of retractable landing gear and lights I can control and all the other fancy toys we can add. I have a DX6i which works fine and I wondered if there is some sort of secondary solution for those extra channels rather than replace the whole TX for the sake of a few more switches.

I seriously doubt it. It's not just the switches. You'd need to multiplex the extra channels in with the main signal which just has to be impossible given the modern frequency-hopping TX's. Or, you'd need a solution that involved a second RX in the heli (as the RX's bind to one TX).

Bottom line - it'd be complicated as hell, and even if possible, I suspect it'd be buckets more dosh that simply changing your TX/RX pair.

you could mix those extras with other channels

That's rather the whole point of extra channels although you can do some stuff by combiing channel effects..say under 1/3rd throttle the landing lights will be on and go off above that. You could use a seperate on board gizmo to feed a constant rate mode setting to your gyro and free up that channel to assign it to toggle another function and use that to switch through a series of effects as it's re-toggled. Or fly a set routine and use an on-board controller to ru the effects you synch your flying to.

You could bind 2 receivers to your Tx and introduce a multi switch or similar for cotrolling the devices. Although it sounds like a mare to get to work

Which is all what I thought would be the case, guess I will have to have THAT discussion with the financial director at home when I finally decide to scale up

            Thank you

Once you start looking at the cost of all the toys you want to put on a scale model you'll realize that the cost of upgrading to a tx with more channels is the least of your worries

Yeh, was just looking at a site here in Switzerland and they have a reasonable selection of scale items including a fully built 2nd hand Super Puma 1.8m heli for ~11,000 CHF

There are lots of ways of doing this if you have an interest in electronics. Basically you can reduce the speed of update to send different switches one at time. If you want an update once a second you could send a different switch on every frame once a second. I don't think you have a spare channel on the DX6i though. You could multiplex the gyro sense signal and as that is an analogue channel you could get even better performance. Cheap micro controllers should be able to do the job. The switches would be the most expensive. On the older txs you could add in extra channels easily as they were often built for more channels and all you needed were more sockets. Robot and boat people probably have solutions. It would be interesting to see if the DX6i could be easily extended at the modulator.

well if its just landing gear and you dont mind being 8 foot away you could try INFRARED RECEIVER and TRANSMITTER

but to be honist if you sell your dx6i you could use the extra you send in the cheep infrared kit to buy a dx7s

Cheap option might be an older tx like futaba ff9 or jr3810 and a 2.4ghz module

Chris its the same RF block as the DX5a and i think the DX8 the 14 byte packet (7 channels) is the same on a 6i or 7 you could just encode the additional channel into the signal its 115kb 8n1 and it has to be there every 22mS the 8 interlaces the high order channels into alternate packets.

its possible but a bit of a pain to complete

Sometimes it is just easier to buy the right equipment for the job, a 2nd hand Futaba 8FG would give you 14 channels to play with and with the 14SG launching I imagine there will be a decent number of these becoming available over the next year.

It's always easier to buy than do it yourself. A long time ago (1960s) it was worth doing it yourself, but with the way things are priced for small quantities it gets very expensive. It is surprising what can be achieved though if you want to play with the electronics. There's not much justification for the high price of lots of channels. A separate low price tx/rx would seem the obvious way, but not as cool as a Futaba 8FG.
