  • How do I stop getting bored?

I'm finding that I'm getting really bored flying in Phoenix really quickly, but love flying in reality. How do you stop the boredom in Phoenix, do you set yourself challenges? If so, what do you do?

I'm finding that I get into Phoenix, have a nice gentle fly around and then get bored... the problem is, I'm not progressing. Every time I try something new, I fail - basically because I'm trying to make it up as I go along because I have no idea how to accomplish stuff. All I can do at the moment is, hover in all four orientations, circuits, figure-8's, flips, rolls, stall turns and bad tick tocks. I started trying to hover inverted (don't need instructions for that), but I find myself getting bored.

Where do you learn to do certain manoeuvres (i.e. learn what the stick movements are for more interesting 3D manoeuvres) and how do you stop yourself getting bored?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

How do I stop getting bored?

You have to treat the sim as a learning tool and not a toy, it's really easy to lose interest and start blasting all over the place and its all good for thumb memory but gets boring very quickly. Little and often works for me and be disciplined. Set out to conquer a chosen move and work on it ;-)

I find the sim very useful i try and do about half an hour a day anymore and you can fry your head i say half an hour cause i have 6 lipos for each of my helis so thats 6 x 5 min flights. I try and set myself goals but it is very important that you learn all orientations. Wheather you are the right way up or inverted. I think the hardest thing to learn was backwards right way up it was like learning to fly again lol. Just set yourself goals

I play music in the back ground, the drone of the helis gets annoying quickly. Also practise 3 different moves to learn, once you get bored or frustrated move onto the next. Failing that practise transitions from one move to another with moves that you know, it's good practise and makes things more interesting when you string set moves together. I wish my flying was as good as it is on Phoenix lol.

For me there is no real benefit for sitting on the sim for ages as my flying turns to mush. Short regular stints seem better for me.

I get bored as well. I am trying to learn inverted, I have mastered the nose in hover and I am now working at doing inverted circuits clockwise and anticlockwise. I have set myself a goal to do 20 circuits each and to be close to the ground and in full control. I find flying close to the ground makes me concentrate more as when I fly higher I don't really know where I am in the sky. Try flying closer to the ground at a constant hight and make yourself do it .

              Cheers

Re: How do I stop getting bored?

Are there any websites which have guides to various manoeuvres, ie stick inputs required etc?
I'm thinking of more along the lines of more advanced manoeuvres like tic tocs.

There is a section that shows you moves with the stick movements on the sim

One of the things I did back in the day was have online lessons with Ade Law on Phoenix. Basically you have skype running in the background so u can chat to each other via a headset and play multiplayer and one person can show you how to do the manouvre and coach you while u try.

Always a good crack online gaming with friends

It may seem daft, but I found that setting the fuel limit on the heli to something realistic ie 6 and a half minutes (in the 'physical' settings part of the model edit 'advanced' menu) and treating each flight as the real thing helped a lot. I also set the timer on my Tx, and try to finish each flight with an auto - when the motor cuts out. Breaks the habit of flying indefinitely, where you end up losing concentration and getting 'mushy' and careless with your flying.

Also, I previously posted about training 'games' - little targets to set yourself. Here. . . http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/beginn...ctice-tip.html
Even with things like hovering orientations, which are obvious as to what you need to achieve, such a game can break the tedium.

I plan a similar training game setup with circuits soon. . . One that works all directions/orientations bit by bit . . . Watch this space!

Try to see how far through the grassroots set manoeuvres you can get in a 6 minute flight. . .
                          3D Format ยป Set Manoeuvres
Or see how many flights you can complete the list in.

Try to practice by doing an exercise as above, followed by a 'freestyle flight' - but keep the freestyle to 6 mins and no crashes!

Perhaps allow yourself a crash flight too amongst those - may as well make the most of the infinite supply of helis on the sim! Use the timer on the Tx to limit your flight time in crash mode.

Get online and see if anyone has a challenge for you! There'll always be something to learn, however good you get!

                          Hope that helps. . . I'm sure there's more but it's late. . .

Thanks to all of you for your replies, I've found them really helpful.

What I have (incorrectly) tended to do is this:

                            1) Sometimes, hover in all orientations and then move in all directions in all orientations (spend about 5 mins on this)
                            2) Most of the time I'll start here, fly around doing circuits and figure 8's until my flying gets a bit sloppy at which point I'm getting bored (30 minutes or so)
                            3) Go online and crash frequently because I'm watching others rather than watching what I am doing (their helicopters tend to be far more interesting to watch )
                            4) If I don't do 3) then I tend to start trying to do new things, but by this time I am fatigued and bored and have no idea how to accomplish what I am trying to do (10 minutes or so).
                            5) Close Phoenix feeling like I really haven't accomplished much... generally because I haven't

I'll change the above pattern to making sure that any Phoenix session I go into, that I am aiming to accomplish something specific rather than flying around randomly. I'll use the links that some of you have posted in this thread for inspiration. Setting up the fuel limit sounds like a really good idea.

Join one of the forums online sessions, there is no better way to learn then from actual people telling and advising you on where going wrong and what your doing right, also
gives you a chance to meet new people who you may eventually fly with in real life
