  • Old issues of heli mags

I recently found this somewhat fascinating. I just got a January 2005 edition of MHW on Ebay because it features the Dyna-X and it's really interesting to see what was the state of things going back a few years. In general, as would be expected, very few FBL and very few big electrics and a lot of the kits were quite pricey.

Some familiar faces are there, Coolice in F3C flying a Century Predator, one of my clubmates judging a comp, Paul Heckles did the test flying of the Dyna-X. Of course Mark Christy on the F3C team.

There are some models that I never heard of that I guess are just history now and some that have remained with very few visible changes. Minicopter had just released the Joker 2, Hirobo were advertising the Sceadu evo 30 and 50. Curtis was flying a JR.

I found it really interesting to see where things were at the time. This was a few years before I started but in general terms it's not very long ago but the heli scene has changed so much!

I've just been given a few mags from 3 years ago, and I'm amazed how many IC powered models there were being reviewed way back then!

We have a stack of old mags lying around our clubhouse some dating to the last century. It is really strange to look back at them and see the progress.

One had an article about an electric heli connected by a cable to a car battery!

There were more articles about scale too and of course there was no Internet (to speak of!) so all the shops had real advertisements.

Another article that I found really interesting was explaining about Ecpm as opposed to CCPM!!!

We are so lucky today thanks to those early pioneers.

About a year ago I threw out hundreds of heli mags. Nobody wanted them.

                  Hey Sheryl.

That was a good year for me from memory, I'd put in a lot of practice with Mark Tilbury (CenturyUK boss and my sponsor at the time) who is a former British National champion and worlds competitor, then actually beat him in a B schedule round! Good old Mark was pleased for me though.

I have magazines dating back a lot further still and as you say the difference between now and then is amazing. Indeed with the amount of time I have been in the hobby (30 years+ now) I have seen a lot of changes.
The likes of Mark Tilbury, Noel Cross, Colin Bliss, Len Mount etc. where for want of a better word my F3C idols, very knowledgable and very friendly to. Fast forward a few years and I remember watching Bob Johnston and Nick Moss, who where in the 90's from memory, part of the Kyosho Concept display team bring 3D to the UK in a big way and following them to.

The equipment we have now is so much more advanced, my first electric heli's were a Kyosho Concept EP/Kalt Whisper running 6 cell buggy packs!

Yeah, I find it fascinating. The comp in this issue was the British Nationals at Barkston Heath. The F3C final results were Mark Tilbury 1st, Noel Cross 2nd and yourself 3rd. Dave Wilshere was 4th and one of my clubmates at Boxhill, Steve Bowie, was 5th.

There's a review of the OS91 SX C-spec pumped engine, it shows the Henseleit 3dNT and Mikado Logo 14 but electric is only just starting to make a splash and I think they're talking like LiPos are something just emerging and not yet the common battery type being used.

The Dyna-X is considered an all-out 3D machine, so yeah things have moved on massively.

I don't know when it was exactly but people were taking cordless drill batteries and adapting them to use. I flew my first electrics with NiCads and they were huge. When was that, around the late nineties. My little Eolo had a ridiculous NiCad battery - she runs on LiPo now but with the NiCad it was tremendously underpowered. Today's LiPos are light years away from those days. When the next big battery revolution comes in I suspect it will 60% win me away from nitro.

When I started flying originally about 18 years ago, there was not even any talk of electric flight (not commercially)... The hirobo shuttle was the 30 sized weapon of choice and computer radios were available at huge price. Flybarless was heard but incredibly difficult to fly (no 3 axis gyro) and mostly for scale helis.
I took an 18 year break and have just started flying again and everything is so different... I've only seen one person flying nitro (you know who you are Jimmy!!!) and flybarless is virtually the norm... I wonder what the next 18 years will bring?
