  • Is it worth getting a sim? specifically Phoenix?

I currently own 3 helis, mCPx, trex 450 and trex 500. I can hover all three confidently and move around in gentle circuits (mostly tail in at the moment). I haven't crashed either of the bigger helis yet (the mCPx crashes almost every flight at least once!!!) but am also not really progressing much.
I'm happy to spend £70 on a sim, but only if it will make a difference to my flying. Is it really like flying the real thing? do the skills transfer well enough? I assume that my DX6i will be adequate to use with Phoenix?

    Thanks for any advice

Absolutely! A sim is totally essential in my opinion. It will help you throughout your flying life! Everyone uses a sim. Imagine trying to learn piro-flips or inverted flying etc without it?? Very expensive lesson!

Dani, I haven't even seen one running... apart from about 18 years ago, when they were first coming on the market. Back then they bore no resemblance to flying a real heli.

Worth every penny. It is a must in a hobby like this unless fund is not limited. You could tweak the settings to fly as close to your real model. Nothing substitutes the real thing but it mostly teaches your memory/muscle reflex on your thumb nor finger to react to the model esp when it is crashing without even thinking.

have a look at the phoenix demo site if you havent allready. I was sceptical at first, but there is no doubt they are very useful in saving you lots of crashes and teaching you loads. I bought one some time back, and at times I love it, and at other times it can bore you to tears. Use it alongside your helis and particularly with the cold, dark wet times ahead get on as much as you can, and you will progress quicker. There is possibly more of an argument against not needing one now, with helis like the mcpx, nano, and 130x, all having "bounce ability" and tiny repair costs compared to the more conventional cp heli that hates being crashed, but despite this, I think you should still get the sim. It really becomes very usefull as you begin to flip and roll.

If you want to push your flying then a sim is a must....unless you have really really deep pockets

Ok, I'm pretty much sold... I'm guessing that judging by the number of posts in the Phoenix forum, that's probably the one to go with?
Do I need to buy anything else, like cable or is it go to go with my DX6i?

Phoenix comes with a Spektrum adapter I believe so just plug it in, follow the instructions and away you go!

My internet connection at home is too slow to attempt to download any more than about 50Mb files... so unless the demo's less than that, I will have to jump in and buy the real deal.

Any suggestions on where to buy? what version etc?

With this being updatable you can buy it second hand but I spotted it brand new for £52 posted on ebay

Doesn't matter what version you buy - updates to the latest/greatest are free. In reality, you're buying the adapter cable! I bought a box with V3 in it, and immediately upgraded to V4.

Top tip - don't try to fly the small models on it - I personally find them too small on screen and too flightly. My personal preference is the Henseleit TDR on Phoenix which somehow feels like flying my 130x in real life!

I was going to say that if you got Phoenix some of us go online and fly together, really useful as mistakes can be pointed out or advice given etc...but if your internet is slow you might struggle

My internet connection is fast enough to game online (World of Tanks, World of Warplanes etc) but downloading large files takes a while and kills the bandwidth for everyone else. I suppose I can leave large files to download overnight.

I'll take a punt with that ebay version for £50, the guy's got 100% positive feedback and looks legit.

I'd avoid ebay as a few have been caught out before. Spend a little extra and get the real deal from a trusted supplier:

Too late, I've bought it... I did a detailed check of the guy's feedback and reckon he's ok.

I paid by Paypal so any issues I'll get my money back.
