  • Do I need an external BEC?

I have a T-Rex 450 Pro DFC. The standard ESC BEC is rated to 3A continuous, 5A burst.

    I have just ordered MKS DS95 servos. I'm also running a 3GX, Spektrum AR8000 + satellite and TM1000 telemetry.

Do you think getting a dedicated BEC is a good idea? If so, which would you recommend and how would I wire it in?

    Thanks

I would recommend going for an external bec. There are plenty of brown out threads if you go looking. Mine is wired in by soldering to the ESC connectors which connect to the lipo. Mine was only a cheap BEC, but they don't seem to stock them anymore.
    Cheers,
    Simon

Would it be beneficial to run both the internal BEC and external BEC in parallel (assuming same voltage)? Seeing as I already have the internal, would it give additional redundancy?

Or can I run the servos on the external, and keep the internal for the receiver?

Bad idea to run both BEC's in parallel. It will almost certainly end badly.

That will be business as usual then; most of my flights end badly

Just disable the ESC's BEC by disconnecting and isolating the red wire on the lead that goes into the receiver.

remove the positive wire out of the esc bec and cover with some heat shrink and run an external bec is the best way

Don't remove the negative wire, If the red wire is still connected there will still be issues as there's still a common ground between all the components. Just The Red wire is all you need to remove.

I've just seen this wiring diagram:
                    http://www.castlecreations.com/suppo..._bec_setup.pdf

It shows how to use multiple BECs in parallel.

Unless anybody can think of a good reason not to, I think my plan will be to use the internal BEC to power to receiver, 3GX and telemetry, and the external BEC to power the servos.

Surely the extra complexity involved to rig it up makes it pointless? Also the receiver 3GX and telemetry draw such negligible power levels compared to the servos makes it even more not worth it.

This is a 450 remember, so I'm at the stage where I pretty much need to run a custom wiring loom with custom crimped plugs to fit it all in and keep things neat. I also want to run nav lights and camera. So doing the split power supply at the same time won't be too much of a problem.

Also, I like doing stuff like this - it is part of the hobby. Not so much when it goes up in smoke (although I daresay my suppliers like that bit).

just for info run a cc bec pro on my 550 this is designed to run with twin outputs. i know you are running a 450 but pilots with much more knowledge than me have always told me to disable an internal bec when running an external one so i would think you would do this in all setups?

Thanks. I'm looking at that but I don't think it will fit on my 450. I'd need to mount it at the back. I'm working out the pros and cons of that before I hit Order.
