  • 3GX - One satallite or two?

    Hi all,

I'm just starting the set up of my Trex 500EFL and have the option of using a Speky AR8000 DSMX receiver and/or a SPM 9645 DSMX remote receiver (I take it this is also referred to as a satellite receiver) with the 3GX.

I can't see the point of using the AR8000 if it makes no difference to using the remote - however the 3GX manual seems to suggest that I should use two remote receivers but I can't find a reason.

I could really do with some thoughts and advise as to which would be best.

    Thanks in advance........

well on the 3GX from a 500 size you should use 2 sats ... nothing more to say really ..

The two remote receivers will give you better coverage (reception).

With only one there is bound to be an orientation where the aerial is shielded from view, and signal quality will be worse. Two reduces that risk.

So one either side of the main frame then would make sense I guess?

This may be stupid ( I'm not sure) but would I get the same result using the AR8000 connected to the 3GX with one remote connected to the AR8000 (or would it need to be connected to the 3GX?)?

I don't know why I am having such a job getting my head around this!!!!!!!

          Hey.

Yes, using the 8000 receiver will alleviate the need to purchase another satellite receiver as it has two sets of aerials which will do the same job.

Fitting two sats to the 3GX will make the installation much simpler and neater, but requires you to purchase another satellite to assure good radio connection in all angles.
Then it's just a matter of mounting your sats at right angles to one another, this applies to your 8000 receiver and separate sat also.

One sat will be fine for setting up 3gx & for hover to small circuits but beyond that best to go for 2 sats
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

                Thanks all,

I think I'm closer to understanding. I'll probably set up with what I have but get another remote in the future....

Simple way to think about it:

                  AR8000 has one antenna
                  Satellite has one antenna

Spektrum radios are designed to work best with two antennas, so either use AR8000 + satellite, or the 3GX with two satellites.

Remember a satellite may have two wires, but they form a single antenna.

I would never willingly fly Spektrum with one antenna.

Nice article, thanks Alastair. I havn't done any serious work with radio waves for several decades, I think that in the depths of my mind, what I once knew was getting confused with what I was trying to know now....

I like to 'understand' not just 'take for granted'.

That piece just hit the right spot.......

Glad it was an interesting read. Like ourself I want to understand too. I pulled the logs from my dx8 telemetry on my 550 and the results were great from following the placement on that page.

BTW. Where in Scotland are you?

2.4Ghz is a bit tricky. I've had one glider fly away when using a single aerial on a cheapo Spektrum clone that range tested ok. With a heli that is less likely to happen especially as the heli will probably be moving relative to the tx and breaks in tx will be short and probably not noticable as the rx holds the last position. Except for throttle, but a frame of zero throttle probably won't be noticed. If you have telemetry you'll find that the reception quality varies all the time. I can't think of any reason not to have two independent rxs. I would also use a rx that allows the active part to be positioned away from the frame or avoid a carbon frame and carbon blades and any bits of metal. It is possible to get away with a lot with 2.4Ghz, but it doesn't seem to be a risk worth taking.

I currently run an AR9000 with a single sat. I have bought a second sat and plan to remove the AR replacing it with second sat. Do I need to redo 3GX setup?

Na, but will need to bind it.
