  • Perfected my Trex 250 SE (at last)

I'm just posting this for information to try and help others.

Since I "upgraded" my 250 to FBL, I have been chasing horrendous tail problems. I'm not too sure whether it was the FBL conversion itself, or that during this time, my flying has improved in leaps and bounds - but whatever, the 250 was close to being sold for parts after having a small fortune spent on it.

Here is the spec now after this hassle:
    • Genuine Align Trex 250 SE
    • Scorpion 2206 3900kv motor running 16t pinion
    • Castle Creations Ice Lite 25amp ESC goverened to 4200,4400 & 4600 on normal, I1 and I2.
    • Align FBL head
    • Stock align carbon blades
    • Savox SH-0257 servos on cyclic
    • MKS DS95i tail servo
    • AR7200BX FBL Controller
    • Align carbon fibre tail blades
    • Microheli complete tail assembly

The main thing that most of you may want to know is what was the key thing that solved the tail wagging?

It was the MH tail assembly. Yes, it was expensive @ £50 or so, but this item is beautifully machined, and absolutely no slop whatsoever. I don't understand why Align could not achieve something similar - as the stock tail I had generated enough slop to rotate the blades about 15 degrees without moving anything else.

Just been out for first test flights - wound up the tail gain to about 45 on a DX8 and she now flies absolutely beautifully. No wagging, despite any moves I could throw at it.

I also have to say that the Scorpion motor upgrade, in conjunction with the governed set up is a revelation - amazing power on such a small heli.

    Loving the 250 again now.....

Good to hear persistance paid off for you. I hope you enjoy your heli and get lots of fun out of it.

Had a similar problem on the 450 where there was too much movement on the tail shaft. I sorted it with a shim washer. Wasn't as bad as yours but the tail blades could move on their own a few degrees.

Have to say I quite like my 250 DFC pretty much stock.

Never had a tail issue to speak of although I admit I'm no 3D pilot and only doing tame scale like stuff.

Glad you got yours sorted tho.
        Cheers

Good to hear you got it sorted out.

I've had 2 MH tail assemblys in the past and found that they are very good after being disappointed with the originals. They always seemed to sort out any wag, mainly because there was less slop. Just be warned though (mine was made from titanium), there are parts that wear fairly quickly (especially the vertical pin on the pitch slider), which causes some slope in the assembly after some time and may bring your wag back.

I have now gone back to the originals and paid meticulous attention to get the tail assembly moving as smooth as possible and change the bearings on the (tail) blade holders (whenever I have a wag) and never had a problem since.

The 250 really is a labour of love, but when working well, it's awesome!

Glad you got it working to your satisfaction.

I too had tail issues with a AR7200BX, several upgrades later, mainly aimed at reducing the vibes, not that there were any, no difference. The AR7200 was tried on a 450 and 500 sized helicopter, same problem.

What worked for me was adjusting Parameter D - Tail Heading Lock Gain to very low (purple) and then cranking up the gain in the TX. I got the tip from another website.

Symptoms before this change were low holding at all settings, higher settings just resulted in low holding ability and a wag.

It could be some of these AR7200BX's have this issue, I have another one that I just fitted and it was fine without any issues whatsoever.
