  • lipo charging

    Hi all,
I have just changed my batteries to turnigy 5.0, and am not sure if all is ok when charging them.
I have a century 6x balanced charger hooked up to a psu.
Battery has now been on charge for 15mins and amps on psu remain constant at 5.2 and lipo charger is quite hot.
    Any ideas
    Paul

From what I've noticed on my charger is that the charging current remains quite constant until the last 10-15 minutes where it starts to trail off. 5.2A is a lot of power and the charger will get hot unless fan cooled. My B6AC was pumping out 25-ishV at 3A (about 75W) and it got HOT. It's only an 80W charger and was at its limit. I got a Sigma EQ Hyper (200W) and it has a clooing fan and stays icy to the touch even when charging my 6s, 3000mAh batteries.

My cellpros 10s takes about 40 - 45 mins approx to charge a 5000mah 6 cell from 20 % capacity @ 1 c charge rate. Maybe time to get a better charger if it gets too hot and has no inbuilt cooling fan ??

What is the power supply rated to and what is the charger rated to? Eg current and voltage.

What rate are you trying to charge the batteries at?

If the input is only 12v and you are trying to charge 6s 22.8v batteries it will put a lot of load on things if you are maxed out and there is not enough cooling.

Here are the specs for that charger:

          Operating Voltage: 11 ~ 18v DC
Circuit Current Range: Max. 50W Charging / Max. 50W Discharging
          Charge Current Range: 0.1 ~ 6.0A
          Discharge Current Range: 0.1 ~ 1.0A
Current Drain For Balancing LiPo: 300mAh/Cell
NiCd/NiMH Battery Cell Count: 1~15 Cells
          Pb Battery Voltage: 2~20V
          Lithium Battery Cell Count: 1~6S

          It's not really man enough.

6s charging at 5.2A at around 25V is about 130W. That charger is good to 50W. The 6.0A figure needs to be tied into the power rating. The higher the charge voltage the less the maximum charge current. Ah, ice cream man is here. Hope that helped.

            Back now.

Since the charger's pulling 5.2A from the psu and the charger has to double that voltage the chargers output current will be about half that. To keep itself within its limits the charger will be outputting about 2A to the battery. What does the charger's display say?

Thanks for all the advice, looks like a better charger needed.
Any views on what charger would be ok
              Very many thanks

What PSU do you have? I haven't actually got into separate charger and PSU, I tend to get the all-in-ones as they suit my needs.

Others will be along with a vast range of knowledge on this particular subject and they'll help you with names I don't know

                    Whats your budget?

If you buy a really good charger and a separate PSU it can set you back a few hundred £s. But there is plenty of information on here from other threads on making a PSU, or people are selling server PSU's from time to time on the for sale section.

I use the icharger 3010b which wasnt as expensive as the powerlab 8, but is more than capable for my needs

                      Jez,
In the ideal world would like one that will charge more than 1 battery at a time and would pref an all in one type and do away with the psu.
Budget mid say up to 200 as looking at getting another heli soon lol......................

200 is a good budget could even get a second hand cellpro pl 8 or 6 for that and have enough left to build an adequate PSU

How many of what size batteries do you want to charge in what time. That will give you the answer your are looking for. Then there is budget and future helis to take into account. I only have a small charger like yours. I tried to up the input voltage but the fan started packing up. 13v input gives me about the max out put. My B606 runs max all the time.
I brought a PL6 real nice charger 1000W with the right input. Bugger is it blew up after 2 weeks and has been back getting fixed for the last 2 months. Really hopeing it was just one of those things and is good once I get back as was a really good charger.

For the powerful chargers (500W+) i would imagine you will need a standalone PSU. I cant think of any that dont currently.

If you are tentative aboiut converting an atx supply or a server PSU then you could always buy a smaller (200W) PSU for £30-40 and then upgrade at a later date. Or simply buy a pre-converted one off here as they come up quite often on the for sale.

£200 is a nice budget. Just make sure you buy something you dont outgrow too soon!

                              At the mo I have 2 x 5.0 6s and 1 2.7 6s for the 600 and 2 x 2.2 3s for the 450.
Want to get another 600 size to put a fuz kit on.
