  • Fusion 50 - Wind problem

I love me Fusion and it's been my main heli for months. I generally really enjoy flying it but there are times that I just don't want to. My biggest problem is wind and not the beans generated type!

I went out on friday with the Fusion, logo and Rave, when I got to the field the wind was fairly high but I wasn't about to give up and go home. The Logo and Rave flew wonderfully, ok the logo got pushed around a bit but still enjoyable to fly. The Fusion on the other hand was horrid! I felt I was constantly fighting it especially in loops and rolls but even forward flight wasn't nice. I generally run slightly lower head speed so I tried running a higher head speed to see if things got better but no difference. With the year cracking on, wind is going to become the norm and I don't want to have to leave the Fusion at home because the winds up.

I have two chains of thought at the moment; re-mount the BeastX using the VBar silverline tape which has made a huge change to my Logo since I did it; or run 600 blades instead of the 620 spin's I have on there now. I know lots fly with 620's but how does the blade size affect the Fusion's flying? I know this is more likely a BeastX mounting or setup issue and I'll target that first but I'd be interested in what other people thought.

Reducing blade size will increase disc loading and should make the Heli fly better in wind, the down side being that the floaty light feeling of the fusion be also be reduced slightly.

I'm sure some one else knows a little more about this.

A few thoughts: Is it hard or soft mounted? Velcro strap? What do you have pots 1 and 2 set to? What head speed?

I've only had one 3 min flight and the only problem I noticed was the stiff links which I'm replacing with QuickUK ones

The BeastX is mounted on Spartan black foam pad without any strap (pic below). Probably not ideal and one of the reasons I'm targeting that first. Pot 1 is slightly positive while 2 is straight across. All my links are smooth as I like to make sure they all move smoothly on all my helis

Assuming vibrations are under control (BX is more susceptible than most i understand) then in general it prefers a harder mount in my experience.
I'm running a vbar on my fusion but have the sensor taped to the gyro mount inside nose on a layer of 3M 4011 tape and a velcro strap to give some extra tension but cushioned rather than a zip-tie
Its generally solid as a rock even in wind i wouldn't fly my 450

I had a few flights on my Fusion a few months back with it acting kind of strange, turned out to be my vbar sensor had come unstuck in 2 corners because the flimsy plastic mount had warped!!

Thankfully waveydavey sent me a alloy one and its been fine since...yours looks, well, not flat too??

Yeah I took one look at that mount and pulled it out. Replaced it with the CNC one.

Two easy things to try would be; 1. lightly strap the BeastX with a velcro strap just to compress the foam a bit and see if that makes any difference. I tend to think a BeastX vibes / tape issue is going to show regardless of the wind though.

                2. Try a fairly heavy set of 600mm blades. Blades will make a big difference in wind, you want a blade with a rearward C of G so that it lags more than it leads. I have not tried the spin blades but I have a pretty wide range of 600mm blades and the light aggressive ones are a lot of fun in calm conditions but are all over the shop if it's really windy. (and I'm not talking about the Fusion specifically, just in general as I have not yet settled on the ideal blades on the Fusion due to lack of power in my current setup being the first issue that needs sorting).

I'm flying with the Rail 606mm blades and i'm very happy with stability for my level of ability
