• Driving licence Warning!

Some friends of mine have just given me the heads up re the renewal of driving licences, it seems when you send it back to DVLA with pt2 (the only proof you have if you have a motorcycle licence) and you have any MC club affiliation the licence will come back minus the motorcycle part and you will have no proof that you had a motorcycle licence too! so copy all dockys you send to the DVLA. remember the new licence type only lasts ten years! So don't get caught out!!!!!!!!!

    cheers

I still have my past certificate, I'd love to see them try and take it off me! Lol.

This isn't a new thing matey, The DVLA have been subtracting motorcycle entitlement for years now

As said though, copy all documents before sending to the DVLA

I've never had a problem though, the only way they'd have my bike licence off me would be to pry it from my lifeless fingers ;)

It would be more than their life was worth to part me from my beloved R1 and licence. My licence is so old, it's on papyrus :triumphant:.

The best thing to do is renew your licence online. Worked in the motorcycle trade for years so have seen this happen many times

It's definitely happened that people's licences have come back minus the motorcycle entitlement, and in some cases it was hard to get it restored. It's probably worth looking what MAG/BMF advice is on this. I think one school of thought is to hang onto the old licence.

However, I think it's a bit paranoid to suggest it's down to 'MC club affiliation' (I assume we're talking MC rather than MCC, etc. I can't see that being an affiliated member of the Suzuki Owners Club is going to have any bearing - even in a very silly government official's head...) Aside from anything else, I can't see how the DVLA would know - and government really doesnt' seem to be that joined up.

I 'lost' my motorcycle status when I changed over to the new style but did not find out until some years after when I was trying hire a motorbike. Despite many letters to our MP's etc and the DVLA, I have never managed to get it reinstated, so four wheels only for me now.

You might be amazed how un-amazed I'd be... ;)

It's just the idea of the information (if it were actually accurate in the first place) getting from one agency to another, that I'd find surprising.

If there were a conspiracy, I reckon there'd be more chance of people who hadn't owned/taxed/etc a bike in many years magically dropping off the bike licence list.

But I think it's unlikely it's anything but a ****-up. The grief it will cause with people getting caught out or contesting it just isn't worth it.

Oh yeah - do the BikeSafe course. Aside from being a worthwhile good laugh, the course certificate effectively proves the police officers involved have checked your licence.
