    PC Network Question

    More of a sanity check really before i decide to buy...

    Currently on Sky Broadband using the router they supply - 4x100mbit ports on the back.

    If i buy a gigabit switch and connect it to the router via the uplink port - if my PC and NAS (both gigabit NICs) to the switch via Cat 6, then data transfer between the NAS and PC would be gigabit even though the connected router is 100mbit?

    All i want is a gigabit from PC to NAS and then 100mbit to all other devices.

    It should work if i am thinking logically!!

    Switch will work at 1G a router will always assume the speed of the slowest device ... if my memory is good

      Yes, that will work.
      Get a decent switch with auto sensing ports, doesn't need to be anything fancy though, Netgear simple Gb switches work fine.

        You won't need cat6 - 5e is plenty good enough. There's almost no chance you can achieve cat6 certification at home an there's no point in the additional expense.

            Cool, Can make me own then! Not delved into the realms of gigabit yet - wrongly assumed that 6e would be the best option!
