  • Helical gears, vibes and clearance

    Hi all,

Couple of questions, I put the 550 in last week, fortunately I fly in a cornfield which cushions it very well, the only damage being a broken fin and stripped TT gears. 3 days later she is all fixed again. I done a ground run up without the rotor head and tail assembly on, to check for vibes and ensure everything is straight. Unfortunately im getting some serious vibes across the whole heli. To give you a good idea of the vibes imagine holding your mobile phone whilst its vibrating, then intensify that a bit, this is the kind of vibrations I'm getting, which is clearly not acceptable.

I noticed I had a case of "wobbly gear" syndrome off the main gear, getting approx 1mm-1.5mm of vertical movement. I substituted it for 2 other spares I had but both were not spinning true either. Knowing this it's a no brainer to replace it with a the 700 CNC helical set up using these parts:

H70020B - CNC helical Main Drive Gear 112T
H55071 - Helical Motor Pinion 11T (gives me a 10.18:1 ratio similar to standard set up)
H60200 - Main Gear Case Set

My first question is can I use the existing auto gear with the above set up? Would save me some cash and time if I could.

My next question is does anybody run their 550 with some vertical play in main shaft? The reason I ask is before the crash I ran the heli with no play in the main shaft, the instructions illustrate using the supplied shims to eliminate it. In an effort to reduce vibes I tried the ground run up with and without a shim installed, the vibes reduced slightly without the shim fitted. Personally I'm not entirely comfortable with it fitted as it was pretty tight, I feel it was putting unnecessary axial load on the top bearing. I can't tell you quite how much play I'm getting until I dig out my feeler gauges buts it's pretty much the thickness of the shim 0.3mm.

Finally anybody know the part number or where i get another jesus bolt, I don't particularly want to buy the whole RC screwz set.

    Thanks in advance

    Matt

have you changed the main shaft, might be bent,i use the shim supplied and it is tight but no vibes, you should get a jesus bolt in the pack if you buy new mainshafts, not sure about the gears but im running mine with helical gears, its the v2 so came in the kit, same as the 600 pro but not cnc, very quite compared to straight ones
    SPY750 CLASSIFIED in build
    TBS DISCOVERY enroute
    Trex 450 pro in bits

The mainshaft runs true so I don't think its that, it seems to be the smoothest thing on the heli. Vinny do you know if the V2's helical gears bolt straight onto the V1 hub? Not sure if its a different design? I take it you don't get any wobble from the main gear seeing as the teeth are slanted.
