  • 550E FB headspeed

    Quick question if I may...
I'm just starting to fly a 550 E FB with stock Align motor, ESC, Align 550 blades, 6S5000 LiPos.
Just wondering what is a good headspeed? I just measured it at 1800 - 1900 at hover.
The reason I ask is that although it flies lovely and smooth & stable, it does seem to lack 'punch'.
Punching full collective from hover, it doesn't exactly scream skywards - more sort of floats off gently! - e.g. from hover, full collective for half a second or so, and it goes up maybe 10 feet.
Measured collective is plus / minus ten degrees.
It just seems very much slower than my 500 in the climb. Is this to be expected?
Maybe I just got used to the 500?
    Any wisdom very welcome!

That does not sound right. That head speed is too low for a start i reckon. I use 523 Edge on mine. That will make a big difference. I suppose using bigger blades will drop the head speed. You may have to use a different pinion to get the setup right i think. Im no expert though

Is ten degrees pitch not a little low?

        I run around 2500 hs and +/- 13degrees pitch. And it's a blast.

          Thanks guys.
I could try some shorter blades, although I believe the 550mm Aligns are the standard?
I'm running 75% throttle , and I'm sure it wouldn't get anywhere near to 2500 RPM even at 100% throttle. 16 tooth pinion on it.
          Everything is free-running and smooth.
Maybe motor has gone weak, or ESC is fooked? Do I need to 'teach' this ESC what 100% throttle is e.g. by powering up at 100% or something, to sort of calibrate it?
          Thanks!

Try 83% and 12deg pitch. Should sort things out.

The 550 ships with 520 blades mate. 10 degrees pitch is fine it should still have some grunt. It will still pull pretty good with 10 deg and 520 blades. If you want to run the 550 blades you will need to change the pinion

Your motor and esc will be fine.... it is those blades that are the issue. you need to change your set up to run them.... or go back to stock

Using more pitch with your current setup will cause the motor to bog horrendously i think.

if using 550 blades use the smaller pinion supplied not the bigger one as stated in manual. is your esc set on quick response?

Thanks to all for this, really helpful!
Def is motor bogging down on long blades - I tried going up from 75% to 85% and 90% and no increase in head RPM. Bogged I think.
                    Interestingly, 1900 RPM looks about right - am I right in thinking 1220KV x 22Volts x 16 tooth pinion / 170 tooth main gear = 2526 RPM. So 75% throttle of 2526 = 1894 RPM or thereabouts?
Anyway, I'll get some 520mm blades tomorrow (hopefully), and see how it goes.
Cheers all for pointing me in the right direction.
