  • New owner - power system question.

    Hi guys,
I just got a TDR, it's used but cared for and in practically new condition.

The motor installed is Scorpion HK 4530-540 LE which I think is overkill for me.
The ESC is Robbe Roxxy 120HV, which is specced at 150amp peak. WR Bec and VBar governor, headspeeds 1450-1850.

At the moment I am seriously thinking about swapping this motor for a pyro-52 or a lesser scorpion (HKIII4035-560), for a couple of reasons.
I have no plans to smack this TDR around, not really interested in beating speed records as well, also I think this ESC may not be up to the task in some extreme conditions, as this motor can draw 250amp for 2 seconds. I also don't want to put unnecessary stress on the heli power drive (I don't think it was designed to handle 10k power systems without accelerated tear and wear)

    Any thoughts?

If your keeping that motor I would use the new Scorpion if getting any other I would go Kontronik
    + 7 x Eddies finest EGS's

I'f that's Grants old one, leave as is. It flew spot on!

Plus he has probably tried every known combination of ESC and motor

I'd like to give this Robbe Roxxy ESC a good chance. It was tested and flown by Timo Wendtland and it's reported and confirmed that it works well with VBar governor. I'll see how it works, if it's too much trouble, I'll swap ESC to heli Jive or even Jive 120.
My thinking is that I don't really want insane power on this TDR - current motor provides 10,000 watts - as I'll never use it. I'll get a Goblin if I want a 700 size flying gnat . What I want is smooth flying heli with minimum maintenance and problems.

Anyone wants to swap pyro-52 for my HK 4530-540 LE (great condition and new bearings installed, it was bought from this forum member).

Yes, that's the one and I trust him 100%, I have seen it flying many times (although with powerjive). But, as I wrote in my other post, I may think about "downgrading" this power system to better suit my flying style.

            Hi Michal,

Congratulations on getting the TDR, I hope it all works out for you. What a great heli which will perfectly compliment your flying style, I'm really looking forward to any vids you post.

Watching you fly is always a pleasure and inspiration.

Thanks man, but you know, what I do on the sim I am not sure I'll be doing on the TDR irl.. but who knows

Now I have to mentally and physically deal with power system and sheer size of the machine first .

Ignore the power it can produce, just gear it down to what you want.

Knowing Grant, he would have found THE best combination for it; prob best to stick with it.

Already geared down, unless I can get 12T pinion. I'll look into it.
Not doubt Grant did try everything, just doubting myself
