  • Scorpion ESC Settings : help!

    Guys,

Tonight I fired up my Scorpion 130A HV ESC for the first time with a Scorpion 5020 450kv motor. It's in my Raptor 90SE. The ESC settings are pretty much standard but I was quite disappointed with the soft start: it was nothing like as smooth as I'd hoped and much rougher than, say, a standard Trex 500. Should I reduce the P Gain and/or I gain to their lowest settings? Any other advice on settings?

Also, the amber light flashes when the motor is at standstill, is this normal? And can I remove the IR sensor when the ESC is in normal use? The manual isn't all that detailed.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Si, the amber light is normal, it simply gives a visual indication that the ESC is armed. I have to agree the soft start on mine is jerky to the point of almost stuttering before the initial spool up.
I'll be watching your thread to see if there's a cure. I've kinda learned to live with mine. The strange thing is the original 90 amp one I had was silky smooth on factory settings. I think it may have something to do with the pole timing but I'm not sure.

Shameless bump, can anyone help? Changing p.gain made no difference to the initial startup.

Not sure how to solve your problem, but I'm sure I have read that you shouldn't run with the ir connected. Something to do with effecting the signal to the ESC.

My 130 didn't even work out the box, so not a huge fan to be honest.
          Cheers,

I just got mine yesterday for my TDR. This is an extract from a discussion on HF re the I and P gains.....

"If the I-gain is too high the HS will not be stable in a hover, it will
oscillate because it's very sensitive to load changes. If it is too low, then
there is a lag in governor response.

The P-gain I raised point by point,
until it felt like it was holding headspeed tight under load like climbouts,
power loops and tic-tocs. If the gain is too high the drivetrain sounds like
it's straining and some cases bucking. If P-gain is too low, RPMs drop under
load and you can hear that too.

Your goal is to get a smooth transition
            when you add pitch.

Based on what I know about your setup, try I-gain 5
and P-gain 7 and tweak from there one change at a time. You
could try going to I-6 & P-8. Also give the governor a couple minutes of
flight to adjust its control loop after you make a change."

From that, I guess the I and P gains dont affect the spool up.

Many thanks, for that info. The ESC seems to jerk-start the motor to get it spinning, from there on it's nice and smooth. I'll reset the i.gain and p.gain figures as you suggest. When I do fit the blades (they are off at the moment for on-the-bench spool-up) I'll have to make sure the bolts are nipped-up well, or I could give the head a gentle start by hand to reduce the shock to the drive train.
