  • Velocity 50 N2 so far

Having completed my airframe last night I thought I'd get a few words down while its fresh in my head to outline the improvements over the V2 and the slight disapointments.

My first impressions are very good, nearly everything I had an issue with on my V2 has been addressed on the N2. The weak 2mm "two part" balls that they used on the swash and bell cranks have all been replaced with the 3mm solid ones from the Fusion. The only exception is the tail rod bell crank which still has the little balls on it but I'm assuming they'll not be taking the same levels of stress that the cyclic ones do.
The plastic links and rods are much easier to put together than the V2, they're not as stiff to screw on, dont split and seem much more durable.

The V2 suffered with fuel frothing and needed a mod to space the boom supports out from the frame to cut down on vibrations, on the N2 the spacers and larger diameter frame support come with the kit as well as a tailor made boom support bracket which was another nice touch. The fuel tank itself still has the pressure nipple on top so its a bugger to change the pressure line without splitting the frame but its not something that needs doing too often so I'll probably just change it whenever I have the engine out to change the bearings.

The main gripe of all Outrage owners was having to do the tail pin mod, the N2 comes with a thread cut into the top of the tail unit and they supply a set screw with a pointy end which you can drive into the boom (hopefully) keeping it from rotating. The updated tail unit assembly looks very robust and slop free although mine does seem to be very stiff at the moment but to be fair I havent had chance to investigate it yet.
The torque tube is a big improvement, instead of a single bearing in the boom they give you two and the alloy ends are no longer held in place by pins and heatshrink but have proper bolts and nyloc nuts holding them together.

Although early reports said that the N2 would not require the user to align the engine, clutch & gears it would just require bolting in and forgeting it (like Align), according to the manual it does still need a certain amount of wriggling to get everything lined up and running free but once you've followed Sackos paper strip advice on here (Re the V2) its a pretty straight forward proccess. The clutch itself feels much heavier and is larger than the V2 so hopefully more of that OS55 power will make it to the head. The lower bearing block on the N2 is verticaly adjustable which means that to get the main gear in and out you have to drop it down but it does mean it makes a nice snug fit oce its all back in place.
All the gears are the black plastic versions which were released as an upgrade for the V2, they are much more durable than the old white ones, although to be honest I never had a problem with them other than white shows the dirt. The swash plate and bellcranks are 120 degrees like the Fusion set up with off set cranks so be carefull to get them the right way round, Outrage do give you a clue here though by kindly stamping L & R on them.

My one moan here is that while they saw fit to replace the tiny (and very strippable) grub screws through the elevator arm with larger bolts they still only supply one grub screw for the elevator bell crank, bearing in mind this is your main link between servo and elevator surface one tiny screw is not enough for me. Naturaly I stripped it putting it together but its solid enough so I found another bold and put it through the back to be double sure.

The canopy is nice looking but I'm not sure the 4 point press/push on type of mounting is an improvement over the thumb screws on the V2, even with grease on the stand offs its still a tight fit and I can see these canopies falling to bits pretty quicky with the amount of wiggling required to get them on and off.

On the whole though its a massive step up from the V2 and I cant wait to get it in the air!

    Nice one Guy.

I just went back to the Fusion. I got fed up posting how good they look all the time so I brought another.

With the ele arm I found another grub screw in the bag of spares that came with it and just put another in the back as its threaded on the Fusion and I assume its the same part on both??

Nice write up Guy. Looking forward to some footage of her in the air.

One other thing to look at, the ele bell crank and the ail bellcrank thats on the same side I had a tiny little bit of play in. Using a very small shim that I had that was originally for the tail gears on the E Aurora I took this bit of play out. 0.5mm was needed and although prob no issue I felt something I needed to do.
