  • Throttle and Pitch Curves

    Hi Guys,

First installment of my witterings for RCHeliaddict forum readers is this piece on throttle and pitch curves. As more devices hit the market to improve our machines there seems to be a more lax attitude to setup of the models. Most after markets devices are designed to enhance your setup and not to cater for short cuts. As governors become more and more popular the art of fine tuning your transmitter to get the same effect is being lost. Therefore here is my quick step guide to throttle and pitch curves..

If anybody has any ideas for subject matters they would like covered then please submit them here.

A few topics of the top of my head:

    1) Paddles and flybars.
    2) Static Tracking <- hands up who knows what this is eh?
    3) Mixing ratios and delta.
    4) Dampers.
    5) Engine tuning.
    6) CCPM setup.

    Cheers

        Excellent document Mark.

I think I sort of knew all that, but it's a great piece of writing to have in front of you to really focus your attention - brings it all together very concisely.

Not quite sure I understand are you trying upload a .pdf or trying to download Mark's one. I've just downloaded it fine.

very good, its more or less the way I understood it and have tried to set mine up. I think alot of it comes down to experience it took me a few weeks of visiting the field to get my heli correct enough that I felt I then wanted to play around with a governor.

thanks for that, ive kept the pdf for future reference.
              All the best

                Setup ?

Thankyou for the PDF setup advice. I was advised on setting up my Shuttle +2 to set the pitch mechanically via the pitch rods to 6 degs. at centre stick and with the ATV on the Tx (Futaba 6exh Super) to get -2 degs bottom and +9 at top. As a raw begginer this has worked and I am able to hover about and do slow gentle moves (if shaking hands will allow)

I have now tried setting the Shuttle up as per the instructions with the correct rod lengths and I am having great difficulty getting 6 degs. at centre stick.

If I alter the top or bottom AVT's to get back my -2 and +9 then the 6 degs, at centre goes off. I've only got 3 point pitch/throttle curve.

Do I need to alter the pitch rods to help get +6 at centre and then try and get back -2/+9 with the ATV's

                cheers

                  Peter,

As with all these things it will very slightly model to model.. and also with personal preference. What I've put up is something to hopefully give a good template to those who have no idea where to start.

Also the linkage lengths given in manuals are generally a little way off what you want. They're a good starting point.. but you'll always want to adjust them.

                  As for your current situation.

Don't start trying to get +6 in the middle and working from there.. as you'll get yourself tied in knots.

In an ideal world you want the swashplate to travel from the ends of its travel up and down the mainshaft without any kind of binding issues.

If I remember correctly the Shuttle series have some offsets built into the geometry that tailors it more for begginers and a pitch curve biased to positive pitch. Its not impossible to get -10 to +10 with them.. but its not easy.

Therefore you want to start with your ATV's at 100% and disconnect your servo from the pitch linkage. With no curve in your transmitter (0,50,100) you want to see the servo moving equal distances either way and centering correctly.

Adjust the link from servo to pitch arm so that the swashplate is traveling up and down the mainshaft with an equi-distant gap at the top and bottom of its throw. Increase the ATV's so that you're getting a good throw without the swashplate hitting the end stop in either direction.

Once this stage is done you know that the servo is giving you the most travel on the swashplate that the machine can give you.. from here on it is fine adjustments to the upper links (swashplate to pitch arm, pitch arm to main grip) and your transmitter to get what you want.

Generally with the stick in the middle you would adjust the links so that the blades read 0 degrees of pitch. However like I said earlier the Shuttle range is generally biased to positive pitch. So for the moment you want to aim to have about +3 degrees of pitch with the stick in the middle.

When this is set push the stick all the way up. Hopefully you will see something like +13 degrees. Adjust the transmitter top curve end point down until you get your +9. Now do the same with the bottom end until you see -2 on the pitch curve. Finally adjust the mid point of your curve to get your 6 degrees.

This should leave you with the same feel as before. However you will be able to just adjust the transmitter from now on for greater ranges as your flying level increases.

Hope all of that is clear..

                  Cheers

Governor is an electronic gadget used to keep head speed constant, mainly used on nitro helis, although some electronic speed controllers have them built in.

                              Hi Guys

I was wondering if the information in the PDF doc for setting your pitch and throttle curves can be applied to 400 size electric Heli's or electric heli's in general?

I am in the process of setting up a 400 and a 500 electric heli's

The info seems to be aimed at nitro powered models

                              thanks guys
