  • Tips on restoring helis?

    Hello - I've managed to collect my old Concept 46 VR stored at my girlfriend's grandma's garage last night. It's been in the garage for 5 years so it's in a sorry state.
    there's rust everywhere.. flybar rod, link rods...
    the bearings seem to be ok tho - the main blades spin freely as well as the tail.

    I want to try and restore it over the winter period (it was stored with no engine - just the servos and gyro),
    what do I need to look out for?
    is there any things I need to replace?
    should i reuse the servos?
    Do I need to replace the bolts? ie blade bolts, jesus bolts, etc?

    surface rust on the flybar ect shouldn't pose to much of a problem but i would be looking to strip and rebluild the air frame re threadlocking it all and changing bearing's and blades as u go . As for electrical items check and inspect but it can't hurt to upgrade as you go

      i think if it were me i would strip and build .If there is rust on things that could mean its been a bit damp so the servos may not be to good but put them on a servo tester and run for a bit to make sure they ok

        I would check all the ball joints in the linkages. Early Concepts suffered from very high wear rates, though the later ones were much better. My original Concept 30 was so worn after 2 week-ends flying that the ball joints would drop off if you blew on them hard enough!

        Bearings should be OK with a good greasing, but check that they are running smoothly. They shouldn't have rusted like the flybar or shafts, because they should have been lubricated before flying!

        The state of the servos will depend on the types of pot they contain. Servos shouldn't deteriorate, though it is probably worth having them apart and lubricating the gear trains (light grease, and not too much of it!). If the pots are the sealed type, they'll probably be OK after a bit of exercising. If they are cermet or plastic film removable tracks, clean them with lighter fuel, then put a tiny smear of silicone grease on them before re-assembling.

          thanks. i couldn't find a free receiver battery last night so i couldn't test the servos and gyro. i will create a new thread tonight and will post photos of the heli. i took lots last night before i tried to clean it with a vacuum cleaner.

          the main blades should still be ok i think - there's no dents or cuts to it even tho they were stored attached to the head dangling with no blade holder.
