  • Main shaft grub screw woes.

Stacked my Avant recently (main shaft pin let go in flight), to make life easier in repairs & servicing, I now want an extra long 3mm hex driver to get to the grub screw in the main shaft when in place on the heli (shaft length of 15-20 cm).
Can't find one in uk & e-bay postage from the states is over £53 SUPER-T-DRIVER 18in.Lg. 4mm HEX, SUPER-T-DRIVER 18in.Lg. 5mm HEX items in Handtools R Us store on eBay!

I've managed to do it up with a smaller L shaped type hex, but not happy with it & don't feel that there was enough torque using this method

Anyone know of anywhere, or wants to sell theirs?

Sorry to hear that, dont know how you tighten yours but i remove the fuel tank and insert the long end of a normal sized allen key while gripping the short end with a set of bal link pliers using the part of the pliers designed to grip the link rods if that makes sense to you? Then rather than trying to turn the allen key i turn the head and can get it bloody tight doing this. Blue threadlock on the 4mm pin too just incase the grubscrew does come loose. Never failed me yet.

go to your local car spares shop and ask for the sykes picklevant fuel injector mixture adjusting allen key (or look on ebay)
they come in 3mm or 4mm sizes and have a T handle
the shaft is nice and long (awaiting p thaking on how this sounds)

The week before the crash was my first flight in over 5 weeks. I lost orientation into the sun, then flew into a dark patch of trees, before I knew it I was flying back to myself inverted. Managed to save it - just in time. Told myself that the next flight will be a little more forgiving & more controlled - and away from the big glowy thing.

A few days later back at the field, doing simple forward flight rolls, flips stall turns etc, just to get the flight legs back, flying in a straight line across the flight line when the engine went into high revs & heli ate itself in mid air about 40ft off the deck.
Cut the tail section clean off, torque tub was like a liquorice twizzle thing. Thought I could save it, but it seems you can't with only one good blade, a main shaft sitting 2cm higher than it should be, no boom at all & no main gear drive.

I thought the boom had come loose, but someone had spotted the jesus pin had disappeared & there was free travel on the main gears. This was confirmed when I stripped it down, part of the frames have been chewed up where the pin let go.

Could have done a lot more damage to be honest, (probably under £150) but it's a wounded soldier sitting on the dinning room table as we speak. I now see why Avant have moved to a 4mm jesus bolt rather than a 3mm.

Oh, and it just goes to show that when the heli gods want you to meet the old terra-firma, there's not alot you can do about it.
