  • Gaui 425 Basic - my thoughts

Thought i'd share some brief thoughts on my first few days of ownership of the Gaui 425 Basic.

Firstly the quality of the plastic seems very good considering the cost. Screws are a mixture of philips and hex driven and surprisingly non cheese like. This kit went together very quickly, i'm a slow builder, my Trex 500 took approx 12 hours, my Synergy 48 hours and this kit took 8 hours.

Some of the design of this model definately came from others, gear box almost a carbon copy of the Raptor tail.

Canopy for me was an issue, cutting and glueing. I appreciate this is a bargain bucket kit, but would it have been so costly to supply a preassembled canopy?

For electronics I'm using the kit straight off my deceased 500ESP, but as the motor is a 1600kV, meant I had to choose a different pinion and front gear (total cost £11ish) to give me a calculated max 2600 head speed.

The gear setup is marginally more fiddly to setup due to access but not too bad.

I haven't given the heli a good flight yet, foolishly I opted to put the 500's carbon tails on this heli which are a fair bit larger than the stock tail blades, and boy when the motor was on 100% the tail was not happy, yawing to the left and the gyro working overtime to correct.

One of the biggest surprises was how quiet this model is compared to the 500, it is noticeably quieter.

And would you believe that i've had my first crash already... the main rotor shaft managed to slip in inside the front gear which caused a loss of lift and a funky tail. Didn't quite get it down in one piece, breaking the skids (which seem to be the weak point on this kit) and a blade grip - thanks to revolutions' 30% off, meant the repair cost was £7.

Glad your liking it but would fly fine on a 1400kv motor as your head speed is a tad fast for the model 2100 more the norm....too high a speed you can melt the main's gears teeth even though they beefed this gear some time ago now... and have seen beginners use 1100kv motors to tame it down nicely :) - Some peeps by a second kit as they're cheap enough then they have all the spares they need for a while...and as for the original canopy it is a bit poor and the holes soon break and end up too large for the rubber grommet - BUT the GRP 425 Canopy they do is great... slightly more room for the lipo as well ...

Its been a couple of months, and I have to say that i'm really loving this helicopter. My only real grumble was with the brittle landing gear, but now i have some Trex 500 skids its a real gem.

Can't understand why more people don't give these a try...no wait a minute, ignore that... i like having my £62 bargain kits all to myself... think i'll add another kit to santa's list :)

Definitely a model that can be used as a general throw about/3d trainer/crasher!! -Found it was cheaper to just buy a 2nd kit and use that for spares... Mine is setup for 5s with a Turnigy 500 motor of about 1800 kv,motor pinion is 14t- h/speed is roughly around the 2400 mark(not really measured it)-fitted with trex 600 landing gear as it's what I had lying about-gives it a slightly larger footprint and it does crash well-even with plastic sideframes.

Flight performance is very good- better in fact than the trex 500- not the newer model I might add,,,flips much faster and holds a straighter line when doing consecutive rolls -I tend to fly more pattern style flying than 3d now and with +/- 11 degrees pitch available it's a cheap but fun model that works well..

I actually like it as a camera platform, as it's has a nice smooth drive train:

Excuse my ignorance but how does this kit compare to the Align 450's? would this make a better first heli (after my MCPX?) Im not really that bother about stunts and 3d right now.. jsut want to be bale to fly these reasonable elegantly.

The Hurrican 425 and Gaui 425 have always had this confusion they are both a 500! sized heli
