  • First crash

Well the SDX went in today, a mechanical failure. I was flying normal circuits in idle up 1, then the engine suddenly sounded matallicy (if that makes sense). Then the blades slowed right down, but you could hear the engine at full throttle so I'm guessing the clutch has failed?
I tried to auto but failed. It hit the deck skids first fortunately which saved the canopy (which is the bit I was most concerned about). Bit gutted but there we go. Does anyone know why this might have happened?

    Thanks, dan

sounds like a clutch/ tranny or bearing problem mate.

hope you get her up in the air soon

Thanks mate, I dont think it was a tx issue because it's fairly new, and we tested the electrics after the crash and there was nothing wrong. What will I be looking for when I examine the clutch?

My experience says if it was the clutch then usually you dont know about it till you spool down. centrafugal force holds the broken clutch in place until you spool down so maybe something else? i stand to be corrected though :)

I'm betting a bearing failure. Or running too lean, cooking the engine.

the hirobo clutch will drive when broken
i've seen it on a very abused sceadu that the clutch just dragged all the time, once the engine was removed the clutch fell onto the floor, and he had been flying it for 2 months like it

i would guess the rear crank bearing has failed
but you won't know until you strip the heli

I've started to strip the heli but I the grub screw Holding the starter coupling in has had it's head stripped so I can't get it off. Could I try drilling it out? Or is that a stupid idea?
As for the engine running too lean I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case (may be wrong though) but a club member tuned it to run on 12% nitro about 6 months ago and its been fine, so i expect it's the bearing Like you've all said.

if the hex head is totaly gone then the only option is to drill it
but if some of the hex is there then an imperial allen key may get it out

I've finally managed to get the engine out, but to do this I had to take apart the main frame. After looking at the clutch I'm 100% satisfied that that wasn't the cause of the crash (like some of you have already said) later on tonight I'm going to check the rear crank bearing. Will it be obvious if it's broken?
