  • 3 Kalt Baron S's

I have just bought 3 Kalt Baron S's , now I quite like vintage helis the trouble is I'm still quite a novice , so the idea is to fly one and keep the other two for spares , should I have done it.

it would be a shame to learn on something that you can no longer get pats for.. i would keep them for when you can fly without crashing & buy something that you can easily get parts for & cheap like a trex 450 v2 or even clone of one... or better still start off with a sim..
    Flying Since : Feb 2009

Plus 1 on this unfortunatly spares are a no no or at least very hard to get. A shame really as they taught me to fly , well the Space Baron did.

Ps moved this over to Vintage helis for you, you may get more advise from the oldies there , lol

Hi BaRoN30s thanks for the quick reply ,I have got a sim already an Aerofly pro deluxe , and believe it or not but I have a Graupner Jet ranger(uni expert mechanics) which I have been hovering with a set of training skids on , with no problems yet(touch wood),
I am trying to teach myself to fly at the momment because there is no one down my neck of the woods teaching , I did do about 3 or 4 months flying in Milton Keynes about 10 or 11 yrs ago but its like starting again.

Hmmmm, I just saw three Kalt Baron S's sell on Ebay.

Basically the Baron 30 is a bit like a forerunner to the Thunder Tiger Raptor 30.

The thing that is unique to the Kalts is that the swash does not move up and
down for collective pitch. Instead there is a bit of wire that rides in a slot
in the main shaft. I'm not sure about the Baron 30 S but the original Baron
30 has a hollow main shaft and the collective rod goes inside it.

Since you have a belt driven tail on the S it is a bit less fragile than the
ones with the piano wire drive because those use a main gear with an
integrated crown gear which can be hard to find if you strip one of them.

I think some parts could be substituted with Raptor bits but things that can
be hard to find if they break would be anything on the rotorhead, the main
shaft, main drive gear and frames.

Interesting how everyone assumes because you are a novice you will definitely crash whatever helicopter you happen to be flying at the time. Out of my 100 active helicopters only three have had major ooops and two of them was when I was doing something I wasn't ready for..... Also having taught a number of people so far the only crashes for them have been when they haven't listened and done something they were not ready for. So, I would say buy the Barons for 'vintage' sake but fly them at the level no more than you are capable of then, as per the comments above (which I do wholeheartedly agree with), do your learning to move up in ability on something more modern that parts are available for....

            best of both worlds then

Thats the ones Trillian , nice one you caught me out there(yes I have already bought them) I take it you bought the Robbe off Tom then.I am going to pick mine up saturday morning to collect them and then I am going up to Milton Keynes overnight , I was thinking of sending you a pm to see if you wanted me to collect it for you and I could meet you near the M25 (Heathrow side) on Sunday on my way home, but it looks like you may be sorted.

Yeah, when I first started my very first helicopter was a 3DX 450 and I had been flying on a sim for some months
before ever attempting the real thing. I did have a boomstrike with it from panicing and setting it down too fast.
But after that I went out to Paul Heckles flight school and spent a few hours on a buddy box flying a Raptor.
I then got my own Raptor 30 and I flew it for about a year with no crashes.

Doh! sorry about that Yeah, I did buy the Milli Almost by accident in that I
was certain I would be outbid. I figured if I'm not outbid then I'm happy either way.
                    I'll PM you about this.

Thanks trillian. I have yet to fire it up as I will not be on leave for a couple of weeks.
