  • Servo failure!!

Hi all, I had a weird one today! Was out flying and my jr ds811 digital servo on the aileron just completely died on me! I managed to get it down in one piece without damage I think..... My question Is, why??? And also do I need to worry about the rest of the servos and if not do I need to match the servo to the other 2 again cause the fury 50 has 3 servos running the pitch so I'm guessing they need to be the same spec!

    Thanks Lee

    Hey.

From memory these are JR's entry level digital servos and also as I recall not really recommended for heli use above .30 size machines, .50 at a push if you're not flying it to hard. Reason I half remember this is because I used them myself quite a few years back and had one fail, so changed all of them quickly after.

A quick Google search highlights a lot of failures in quite quick time as well, so probably best to change all before it catches you out worse next time.

Yes you are correct, if your model is using eCCPM control on the swashplate, eg. 3 servo's qually spaced around the swash and working together to move it, then yes you will need to have 3 exactly the same. This is to keep it all in line and matched on speed, torque etc.

Ah, that was my fear! Ok, so I'm using spectrum radio gear and a gy401 with the S9254 servo on the tail. All the other 4 servos are the JR DS811's. My fury50 has a OS50 hyper engine, and 640mm SAAB blades......(relevant?)

What servos would we recommend that aren't tooooo expensive but are good! I'm pretty much new at it so I'm not "THROWING" it around...(yet)

Many thanks, all advice very much appreciated!

All servos have to match on the swash dont try and use something different, if replacing the lot I would go for metal gears if possible.

Align DS610 digital servos are a dam good for their money (£40 ish or cheaper) they are coreless design and have metal gears. They are basically SAVOX servos but re badged and are the servos they put in their combo T-Rex 600 +700 kits.

401 gyro with 9254 is a competent tail setup for basic and intermediary flying only. JR811 servos are for basic only. OS50 Hyper engine is very good, but not for swinging 640mm blades (very long for that engine) - you need to be turning 600mm blades with that engine. SAB blades are excellent. MA Fury 55 is an excellent helicopter. Cyclic servos options have been recommended already.

It's not easy to find something good less than that. You can often find 610s second hand for a bit less. I was going to suggest Spektrum
H6040s because they use the same servo arms as JR, (and have identical specs to the Align 610) but they would be more expensive.

One servo that is in between in torque specs is the JR 8301 but I don't know what the availability is like on those.

But you've bought a very well priced and well specified helicopter kit? Surely it's a small price to pay to match a decent airframe?

                  Hey.

I would advise Align DS610's also, although not dirt cheap they are well priced for their spec and reliability.

Personally what I think you need to do buddy is ask yourself are you planning on sticking with the hobby, as if you are then paying a little extra now will save you buying again in the future. Also the Align DS610's will work in all models up to 90 size, IC or electric and so are a good investment for when you upgrade models.

Failing that keep an eye out in the for sale pages on here or on the BMFA site for second hand ones, which do pop up from time to time.

Hi steve, doesn't sound promising...... Why would it have 640mm blades on it then?? Seems to perform pretty good, lots of power, it had a rubbish gyro and tail servo and a old os50 sx engine which I changed. But going by what u said I need to change everything else.... Maybe heli's are too expensive for my budget!!

Read the post again carefully. I'm not saying all your gear is rubbish, just putting it into perspective. It's mostly good stuff for the right person in the right airframe. I don'y know your competency so I can only base my opinion on my own (quite extensive) experience of all the equipment you have listed. The Fury 55 is an excellent heli that is far from the bottom end of the 50 price market, so it makes sense to put at the very least middle-of-the-road equipment into it.

I'm sure someone will correct me here now, but I have never heard of 640mm blades. 600s and 620s yes, but not 640s. Measure them from the centre of the mounting hole to the end of the tip.

I was thinking that myself but apparently SAB does make a 640, it's an FAI blade and on the heavy side, which would seem a bit
much for the OS50Hyper unless the gear ratio is steeper than most 50 helis. Mine seem happiest with light 600mm blades if they're
running at (give or take a little) 8.5 to 1 gear ratio.
