  • Early 1980's Pictures

Inspired by Peters films, I've dug out some old pictures I've had lying around to share with you.
I've initially just picked a few but will attempt to scan some more in the near future.
Let me know if you recognize some of the individuals in the backgrounds?

Click on the link below the pictures for larger images. (Edit - Ok, I seemed to messed things up there but
it seems to work in a fashion. What did I do wrong?)

These two photos are actually pictures of pictures, taken in Dave Nieman's shop
in Wembley around 1981. The Jet Rangers are Hirobo (I assume) and I think
would be flat-bed mechanics as they would have been built in 1977 for the James Bond
film The Spy Who Loved Me; none survived! Please excuse the quality; I
was still at school at the time and took them in black and white with a borrowed
camera and developed them in my bedroom.

The next few were taken at Sandown in 1982 I think; I guess Jim Morley
holding the new Augusta 109 should tell the year. Not sure who's flying
the Baron. Again please excuse the quality!

I know I have pictures of an event that took place at Woburn Abbey at
about the same time as these other photos but I can't lay my hands on
them. I seem to remember the Woburn event was a very early
    competition.

Anyway, let me know if you have any comments.

    Hey.

I was with my dad at an event held at Woburn many, many years ago! The then very new Hirobo BBC Stork was flying about :-)
At the time I wasn't flying there as I was still learning but fast forward a few years more and I was competing at an F3C event held again in the Woburn grounds. I can't remember who it was but one competitor had a lockout and the model came down hard, it carried on in fast forward flight into the grass bank :-(

Thinking about it I seem to recall some video of my dad flying his 888 at the first event :-) don't know if I have it.

Cor blimey I've been around a long time! ;-)

Looking at the exhaust of the Kalt Baron I'd say it's an early GS (gasser) model. I still have a Kalt promotional video with their top aerobatic model, the Kalt Baron 60EX strutting it's stuff!

the row of morley bell 47's has jim's twin engined bell 47
the two red ones i will assume are jim's aswell due to the colour scheme being the same as his morley bell 47 shuttle conversion prototype

the twin engined 47 started life as a single 60 engine, but jim went playing and if i remember correctly they are two 25's in it

Ive got a picture somewhere of me hovering a 505 back in the 80's was about all I could do back then, just imagine if I had kept it up rather than finding cars, drink and women.

Ill, scan it when I find it and stick it up.
            All the best

I know what you mean by "I've been around a long time"!

The highlight of the Woburn event I remember was the auto-rotation final between Dave Nieman (flying a Falcon I think) and either Mr Heim flying his Star Ranger or it might of been the guy from Watford Models (the foriegn sounding name) flying a Heim. The Heim pilot landed about 6 inches from the spot, everybody applauded, pretty impressive back then. Dave dropped in and landed right on the money; the crowd loved it!! I seem to remember those early events were better attended than todays F3C events.

The Baron is a gasser, I have another picture that confirms that.

              Thanks for your input.

You must be reffering to the Morley with yellow livery? I think I've got a picture of it in flight; I'll try and look tonight.

"Which Baron is this?" - not sure, but the pilot looks like Mick Harris!

And I'm inclined to agree that its Geoff Bell with the Gazelle. I remember him having one around that time, and the pilot looks too chunky for him to be Dave Nieman! (Sorry, Geoff!).

Dave Nieman used electronic mixing for those James Bond Jet Rangers, using a mixer I developed in the mid 70's (years before computer Txs!). Somewhere (and I can't find it at the moment) I've got a picture of all those models lined up in my sitting room, just before he flew out to Bermuda (?) for the filming.

He turned up at my place a couple of weeks later with all the salvaged electronic bits to see what I could salvage! They'd been blown up and dropped in the ocean!

                  Happy days!

If Pete's memory is correct and it is Geoff Bell with the Gazelle, then I beleive that this is the machine that I am currecntly restoring and should be flight ready in a few weeks as long as I'm not working over Christmas again!

Keep an eye out in Rotorworld for more details!

What ever happened to Dave Nieman?

I have in my attic a '60' size (thats a 90 in todays money) Black Shark glass cloth fus that he made and sold. I bought it from Martin Briggs about 15-16 years ago when I had a Shuttle also in a Black Shark body kit. I have always wanted to put mechanics in it, and when building my 700, I dropped the main frame in there, and it was a perfect fit. So one day, it will get a 700 electric mechanics in there.

I have some pics of the Shuttle, so will scan them in and post up.

He's still around to some degree, 2 years ago he flew into Charmouth's fly-in in his full size helicopter :-)
Don't know to what capacity he's still involved in RC helis though if at all.

Dave N is very much still around! For several years he was a full-size heli instructor at Denham, though I think he's retired from that now. I think he still does charter flights.

He's also still got quite a stock of obsolete Hirobo spares. I managed to get a new bubble for my Bell 47 off him earlier this year, plus one or two other bits.

I put up some pix earlier this year taken in his back garden, with my Bell 47 alongside his full-size R44!
