  • Gaui Hurricane Problem, Video Included

Hi All, i hope you can help me with a problem on my Gaui, before i throw it out the window, its driving me nuts.

Couple of weeks ago, a light crash prompted repairs, i replaced-
Gyro from Gaui gyro to Futaba GY520
    Main Shaft
    Feathering Shaft/Screws
    Flybar
    Main Blades
    Tail Shaft
    Tail Hub

Now i'm getting a tremedous ocilation in heading hold mode, but not in rate mode? Any ideas? I've already tried moving the gyro futher away from the mainshaft/motor, its mechanically neutral in the tail, not drifting in rate mode, blades are tracked, headspeed is unknown but high (Skytach doesn't seem to work with it well), belt tension seems good, gear mesh is good. Nothing looks bent

    Spec-
    Gaui Hurriance EP200 V2
Isolab High Speed Digital Tail Servo
    5600kv Motor
    Gaui 18amp speed control
    Belt Driven Tail
HH Gain 70% Rate Gain 30%
Gyro double mounted, with plate inbetween
    CofG is spot on
Gyro set to F3C mode, standard responce (Tried in high speed with no major effect)

    Thanks

    Matt

heading hold gain is way to high :) try again at about 40 ish and slowly up it till it starts to wag then drop it down a bit

Thanks for your reply, but if i understand it right, thats not correct.

As i understand it, Futaba, the mid point is 50% gain. 51-100% is heading hold gain, and 1-49% is rate mode gain.
So if thats right, i have 20% true gain, inboth heading hold and rate mode. If i drop my heading hold gain to 40%, i'll actually have 10% rate mode true gain.

      Does that sound right?

What transmitter do you have? Try lowering it to 60 And see if it improves anything :-)

          DX7

          Will do

It's different on a dx7 to a futaba radio. Are you using the gyro menu or gear channel end points if it's gear channel then set it to 40 and go from there all my gyros on my dx7 have around 50 for the gain :)

HH gain is way too high.
you could also lower the mechanical gain by moving the ball on the servo horn closer to the middle. but it looks like a TX setting at fault.

Matt, good to see the beemer back. Agree with all above re both gyro % gain and possibly mech gain but since rate OK then I figure lowering the HH % should sort it. Jez

Jez, You alive! Haven't seen you for weeks, are you back in the country?

Cheers guys, i'll try 55-60% gain on the tx and see what happens, i'll also check the tail for slop as i think that may have something to do with an occiliation in the tail

                  Thanks

Almost definately too much gain, I got the same gyro and my rappy wags just like that with too much gain.

Ok, no apparent slop in the tail linkage setup.

I've reset the pitch slider arm to the settings in the manual, that is with the gyro not sensing, servo arm at 90 degrees, pitch slider arm at 90 degrees to the boom. This will probably mean that if i want the tail not to drift in rate mode i'll probably have to re adjust that linkage length in due course.

Transmitter gain in heading hold is now 60% (using the gain/gyro menu BTW, not endpoints). So 10% 'true gain' in the heading hold setting.
I've moved the control ball in on the servo, so its now on the closest hole position rather than the middle, reducing the mechanical gain.

So fingers crossed, i'll charge the batteries tonight and try to give it another go tomorrow afternoon

Thanks to everyone that contributed, the problem was correctly diagonosed as too much mechanical gain.

In my haste to get the Inolab servo on, i used the Gaui horn without checking it, which had a 10mm pivot to control ball length. In the end, the 7.5mm setting was perfect, with 65% transmitter gain required to control the tail nicely without wag.

                          Very happy, thanks again
