  • Looking at the 550

Hi guys, seriously looking at the 550 to replace my Velo.
    A few Qs for you,
How often do you fly your 550s? I'm constantly flying my Beam but only fly my Velo a couple of times a week, seems such a waste.
Would I find the 550 less intimadating to fly ie being smaller/electric/cheaper to crash, what do you guys think?
But then another part of me thinks give it time (I've only had the velo 6 months) maybe once I properly relax with it I'll start flying it more arrrrrrrrr head ****!
I'm also getting a bit anoyed cleaning the thing ie spend ages polishing it, one tank of fuel and it's a mess again arrrrrrrrr!

Kind of stuck with what to do, your input would be welcome :-)

The 550 is a cracking electric heli, but it's not that much smaller than the Velocity 50 (being a 30 size). It also sounds like an animal when spooled up so I don't think you would feel any more relaxed flying it than you do with the Velocity 50.
Don't forget the LiPo cost of switching over as well.
It's up to you of course!
      Cheers,

Go borrow a 500.. almost as stable as your velo, smaller, cheaper lipos and a nice halfway house.

Amongst my mix of helis it's way high up the list of favourites..less twitchy than the 450 (of course), easy to grab a bag of cheap turnigy's, heli and tx and just go wthout carting the wheely-bin of tools and fuels for the bigger boys..

It's a shame we haven't got one at the feild.
The good thing about the 550 is my electrics can swop over, would cost about £120 more (taking into account selling velo/engine ect) ex lipos which are £300 for 4 plus, another cellpro £130
Tiz deerer but if I'm using it more makes sence.
Also I'm itching to build a new heli lol

Don't blame me mate, so anyway if you like the way a 90 electric sounds you would need to get a 90 electric. Have you looked at the compass 6HV?
You know how much you love the velocity, and you are doing well with it. How many times have you crashed it ? None, so that keeps the spares cost right down doesn't it. I think the spares for the velocity are cheap and you know how often I crash mine - loads. Its the blades that are the killer and they aren't that much cheaper for 550.

Think about the 90 size E needs mate before you jump on that. Either need many packs or great field charging capabilties.

As Mike says have you looked at the 6HV, more power than the 550 for sure and it is very nice indeed. It runs 12s so still need a few batts to keep going.

If you crave the power then you will need a 90E as nothing compares to them at all.

I had a 550 outrage a while ago, it flew fantastic and was not as big in the air as a 50, BUT, i got fed up with main gear failiures, no matter how i did the meshing they would last only half a dozen flights at best.
You can get after market stronger gears but i didn't think it should be that way.
I ran mine on 6S 5000mah packs, but you can get them now for not much money now either buying Loongmax tipples from the UK (they have just released a 30C pack) or get some import Turnigys from HK.
I can see the massive appeal of the bigger elecs as they stay cleaner.
I would say though take a serious look at both the trex 550 and Compass 6HV, are newer and better looking machines in my view, saw Stefan Simmons fly his 6HV at the weekend and it is one hell of an electric heli. Runs a 12S set up, using 2 6S packs from a 500 that you could get for under 100 quid now easy.
The most impressed i have been resently by a big elec mind is by Chris down at the dmhc on sunday, flying his mikado 600 on 12S, flipping hell that thing had some powerand with the vbar system on, tracked like nothing i have ever seen

Thanks guys, defo not going 12s way to dear on lipos.
I do love Outrage helis, in two minds about the trex 550, and don't no any thing about the 6hv have to do a bit of research later.
Going to burn a load of nitro this weekend then decide.

Thanks for all your help guys :-)

Logo 500 might be a good choice with the ~550 main blades. As it's so light and well made it flies very nicely indeed (perfectly).

Pretty much flies the same as a Logo 600, depending on set-up. Sure the 600 is cooler but also packs are a fair bit more.

one reason to stick with the Outrage 550 ..... spares prices.
The guys on HeliFreak worked out that it's cheaper to crash than a T-Rex 450 PRO, none of the other machines mentioned in this thread will come even close to that for value for money. That's got to cut down the intimidation factor, just keep in your mind it's no more expensive than a 450 PRO.

Of course this only works if you stick with budget blades and don't go bolting on top of the range branded carbon blades.

Dave, it will be no less intimidating than any 50 nitro machine. If you stuff it badly, you risk puncturing a lipo, which worst case could take your machine with it. Best case, youv'e lost a £100 lipo. Running costs will be very smilar to a 50 nitro, but the difference is, you aren't flying a nitro with a few months worth of fuel on board (comparing cost of lipo to number of flights) should it hit the deck.

Stick with your Velo 50. You love the machine, you fly it well, and your flying is coming on well. I just cant see that you will fly this any more than your current machine - you wouldnt be able to fly this on the small electric patch at the field, so you will still have to be on the main flight line.

As I've said before in other threads, big electrics (30/50 size up) don't solve or remove the problems of a nitro, they just change them. Batteries that lose their punch and longevity over time, poorer performance in the cold, cost of setting yourself up with a load of them, charging capability both at the field and at home etc etc.
