  • EC135 Turbine

My EC135 with 4 blade head was completed around 15 months ago but it has taken this long to get it to a point where it felt stable enough to put into a circuit. Well that day came this past Sunday.......thank you Helicommand!

I've still got the article on you building this in MHW and was astonished that you hadn't considered the helicommand rigid or v-stabi for the head. That said, it looks incredible and you've done an awesome job of it. I hope you enjoy flying it now it's all sorted.

        Hi Andy,

Well when I built it those units were around at the time I was buying my parts, so I went with the Helitronix mixer and a pair of 401 gyros. Having invested in that and got it all installed, I wanted to fully exhaust that before pulling it out and trying something else as a swap over is a big and expensive exercise. It's also inportant to fully understand waht is causing the issue otherwise you end up randomly changing things in the hope you get lucky.
The Helicommand has been a revelation and although it will never be a relaxed or easy model to fly, I think there is some more smoothing to come with expo, less nerves and some practice.

Nice one Darren, its nice to see the big beast in the air again
After seeing the broken blades in the portacabin I was worried it would be a long time before it was in the air again.

I should be at the field on Sunday if you are about it will be nice to see (and hear) it for real.

            Matt.

Darren, it looks like it's out of trim and you're struggling with the tail dropping all the time, have you tried a little forward trim ?.

There's nothing worse that trying to fly an out of trim heli, particularly when you've invested a lot of time and money.

My other suggestion would be a pair of brown trousers

Great looking model, and if I where into scale, the EC135 would come pretty near the top of my list.

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?

                  Hi Janek,

It was trimmed out but multibaldes are just like the full size and pitch up the nose in forward flight. This Vario head is also reknown for being unstable which is why it has taken so long and required electronics to become comfortable enought to do circuits.

I know what you mean about the EC though, I was the same. Gazelle next I think!

The most amazing thing was the heat it gave off when on the ground.

If its cold Darren can warm us up no problem

A friend of mine has been flying a Vario EC135 for a couple of years or so now, although OS91 powered and had a lot of problems with the fenstrom tail rotor, I think he's on variation no.3 now which I believe came from a guy in France, the advantage being that it uses thrust races and you can get the tail speed up enough so it actually works, have Vario sorted this out themselves yet?

He used to fly it with the 4 blade head and a Helitronix mixer but wouldn't fly it in any less than a gentle breeze, he ended up putting the 2 blade flybar head back on. Did you consider going the V-Bar route?

Contragulation on a stunning model, it sure sounds and looks more scale with a turbine fitted than it does with an OS91

What a superb model, I too followed the build in MHW and it's great to see the finished article. This gives me hope that one day I will be able to build a scale heli and be able to fly it!

The nitro one flies a little better as it is quite a lot lighter and the Helitronix should sort it out enough, but was not up to the job with the weight of a full scale turbine. I tried for a year to get that unit to work and then gave up in favour of the Helicommand (i did not consider the v-bar as I did not know anything of it). The Vario fenestron is still suspect I think, I too opted for the Cine Scale one made in France, but it does not have thrust races, just normal bearings. It work well but we still needed to modify the entire control mechanism to get the most out of the tail. The french fenestron is way more powerful than the Vario one so there is actually no need to run it faster than the normal gearing too.
Thank you all for the kind comments. It has been a little embarassing trauling the model around scale meetings and either hovering if calm or doing nothing if there was a breeze. At least now I can begin to get properly used to her for next year.
