  • 500 3D Build Thread

I promised a build thread on this, especially as there seems to be a fair bit of interest about the 500 3D at the moment. Now, confession time - I'm no record breaking builder so this won't be a really rapid build as I'm incredibly busy in work just now.

However, I thought I'd start with a line-up of what's going in it:

right, first real chance to get going on this and I've decided to fit the servos before joining the two main frames just to make my life easier later on.

First thing to do is to sand all of the edges of the two mainframe halves, they're like razors and I don't fancy having a cable cut in flight. Seeing as me sanding isn't very exciting I'll not bother with a photo just yet but will post one once they're done.

i remember doing mime, takes a little time but well worth the effort, but it don't take long after that as the heli parts count is low i thought, every thing fits like a glove to & smooth .

Ok, so a wee bit more progress here.

Mainframes have been sanded (one hell of a job due to all of the compound curves).

So this evening I've done the pushrods, centred the cyclic servos (tail was already done) and fitted the arms to the servos. Secondly I've fitted all of the servos prior to joining the frames. This is a totally optional step as it's possible once the frames are joined but it was going to be more difficult. Especially in the case of the elevator/rear cyclic and tail servos which are very well protected (read hidden) within the frames. Even with the frames split as they are, the tail servo needed a little persuasion to ease into place (a wee shove) and the retaining screws on the elevator servo are tricky to get to.

That said, in all it's remarkably straight forward so far, so here's a piccy of the frames 'mit servos' seeing as it's german...

Slight confession here - the head and tail were built last week without pics as my camera had gone awol. It's been a pleasure so far though and in fairness the head and tail virtually assembled themselves when I shook the bag full of bits.

There were no real challenges to this part at all, using 5 min epoxy on my tail pushrod was a new experience but totally event-free.

I'll pop some pics of the finished articles up in the next few hours.

It's fair to say that this isn't just plastic however - I've never seen plastic that sands like this does - seriously hard and resilient.

I truly cannot wait to fly this thing

Good news, the V-Bar Head and Carbon Fibre Tail are here sat on my desk at work - the build recommences tonight with a vengeance.

I must admit, the tail is Heli Porn... The flybarless head is a bit dirty too!
