  • Auto's on Reflex Sim

    Folks,

I'm sure many of you are doing Auto's on the reflex sim but i'm just starting. I've set the channels etc up and had a go. Not doing too good hence the post. When I flick the throttle hold switch the engine cuts and the heli drops. When the heli gets near the floor I flair and try to land but the heli doesn't seam to react and crashes. I've been reading articles, watching vids, etc on how to do auto's but on the sim haven't been able to do one sucessfully yet. Any advice.

I'm not new to helis (flying for 18 months) reasonably good flyer but getting to the point where I feel I need to crack this "auto" business just in case the inevitable happens (which it will one flight I'm sure) and will cost me a small furtune. If / when the inevitable happens, I'd at least like to go home and say I tried to save it love honest!

Anyone has any tips I would be grateful.

    Cheers

    Hi
I find autos on the sim a fair bit different to real life.
Try flying down to yourself (into wind) and flare & land fairly swiftly under power. Then, when you're happy, try it in throttle hold but with the hold point set high so the rotors are still driven a bit. Finally, try it for "real" with the engine at idle. It'll probably be easier in real life than the sim, but give the above a crack on the sim first.
    Good luck
    Cheers, Lee.

      Lee,

On the field I have started what you suggested by flying down to myself sort of coming down at 45deg to a landing but not yet got the heli to the floor. I'll give that a go and see how I progress from there. I'll keep trying the SIM as well.

      Thanks

From what I remember when I had Reflex, I found you needed to increase the 'blade inertia' in the settings for it be a bit more realistic.

Also check what the minimum pitch in throttle hold is. Seem to remember it was about -4 deg by default.

Have to agree with Leebert. Real life autos are far easier than on the sim.
Start low and gradually get higher. Next time you fly (real life) instead of landing under power, switch to hold about 3 feet off the deck and get a feel for how much hang time you've got and gently put it down. Before long you'll be doing them from 200 feet wondering what you were worried about.

I use to think I should learn how to auto and to practice them incase of the dreaded engine cut but I never bothered, always thought there was too higher risk in crashing it through practice. What I did do was learn the theory behind it.

I have now had a engine cut 3 times and so far, touch wood, it has still been in one piece. The biggest thing to get over I found is the s*it my engines cut and freeze on the sticks.

Maybe I have just been lucky....

Thanks for the advice this follows the past 18 months of heli flying most of it is in your head. I'll have a look at increasing the blade inertia on the sim and see how I go. If I can get it something like on the SIM i'd happily have a go for real. My past experiences of the SIM for hovering , nose in stuff, eights (both ways), reverese circuits, loops and rolls etc, is you get the confidence to do it for real and once you let go you can do it. Not many flyers at our club can do auto's to help but it's one of those things on my heli to do list.

Well I'll crack on and see what I can do on the SIM and if the wind and rain ever let up I my get chance to have a go from 3ft.

              Thanks again
