Dave, Check out this link it'll explain a lot more for you A simple high quality 12Volt 100Amp Power Supply- Part1 - RC Groups I've used the Dell 7000245-000 units http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1292514 which are 900W and already have a floating earth so no need to modify internal boards. Its been so popular with our club members there are now four others been built by the guys who saw it. Make sure to use at least 10AWG Silicone Wire for the connections on the PSU and get a good soldering iron to ensure their is a good connection on the external outputs. Very quite and powerful, plenty of info on the link supplied above.

It's a good idea to use a RCB on anything you do yourself. Something that works may still not be safe. At least with an RCB or RCD at the plug end if something does go wrong and either the output or the case goes live, you should be saved from serious shock by the trip. It's not volts that kills you but current. You could have something live and just feel a tingle if you are well insulated. If you then get a good earth connection to a water pipe or any metal electrical device it could well be fatal. If you have modern house wiring you may well be protected at the distribution board.
