Default What's to hate about the Nexus?

    Hi guys & gals,

I'm just getting back into heli's (I have 30yrs+ experience of 1/8 nitro circuit cars but not planes) after dabbling with a Shuttle in the 1990's and find myself with a Nexus 30 which I'm completely satisfied with (after I totally refurbished it) despite it's advancing years. I have a sim coming from Santa but being the impatient type I've already figured out how to hover the Nexus without breaking anything and I reckon it's a pretty stable machine.

Anyway, my point is I've read on here some 'not very good' post about Nexus's (Nexi?) - one member even 'hates them with a passion'. Now I'm not qualified to contradict anyone and I respect experienced copter pilots opinion but I would like to know the bad things about these models so I can be prepared for the pitfalls. I know about the plastic ball-ends which wear rapidly so if I can't afford a Zeal swash I'll saw my plastic ones off and fit brass ones but what else do I need to know?

    Thanks for reading! Buzz.

Buzz .. take what people say with a pinch of salt and you wont go wrong ... Some hate it, some love it ...Only thing I did not like about it was the wire tail drive on mine , but you can mod it with a torque tube with a little drilling and use the complete tail from a hawk 30 .. As for learning to hover on it is fine ... Just fly it and enjoy .. you will find that once you start into fast forward flight that you want something newer though .. Go out and enjoy , you dont have to have the latest and greatest to be in this hobby ....

Nothing wrong with them, you might have a bit of trouble finding spares, but anything will fly, and after all it's your money.

I had one it was OK but bits wore fast as you say. I ended up with a fair few Zeal bits on mine but all bits became very hard to get hold of so it had to go. Guy I sold it to at the time only wanted it for the main gear as they were like rocking horse poo

No wonder they wear fast - Nylon would've been better for a main gear!

Cool, thanks for the advice/reassurance kind people - I will press on with the Nexus for now I'm not experiencing spares problems yet but I take your point(s) on board and maybe buy a cheap modern electric for trying out new manouvers before risking ye olde Nexus! My leanings are toward the scale and vintage side of things at the moment (just as well given my budget!) so the latest greatest thing isn't an issue yet, I'd like to get to a stage where I can fly around confidently and realistically then buy a scale(ish) fuse for it if I can find one.

    Thanks again for your help.

the things always was a poor improvment on the concept the starter shafts are driven with a lump of plastic with a pin through it that breaks at an alaming rate the wire tail was not suited to the modern day servo gyro set up unless u had the nexus df head it wobbled on decent the list goes on i had one brand new one of the worst helis i ever owned in my honest opinion

Had one many years back. My one flew very well. In a crash though.. the cost of parts required for a repair put the end to mine. The wire drive would bend, the guides inside the boom would break etc.. I think it cost about 3 times as expensive as the raptor I had at the time for a similar type crash. I was learning back then, so crashes were pretty imminent then!

Theres a nice chap called Rob who generally has a good stock of spares for the Nexus

not a popular heli after the concept
but a chap in my club used to throw one around like the raptors at the time
i had my brothers for a little while, but i gave the airframe away as i'd got too many models
you will find the pitch bell crank into the mainframe will wear badly but i just drill out the frame hole and fitted a brass main blade spacer into it
don't worry about the wire drive i've got vario scale heli's with hh gyro's running wire drive

and yu can get new main gears again try midland helicopters
other spare may not be so available but look on ebay for them

    and enjoy your flying

Yup - useful looking place but he sure knows how to charge for used bits, I've been buying used and new off eBay without drama so far but a handy bookmark none the less.

    Cheers, Buzz.
